It's a lovely letter. However, I am very disappointed that George Takei endorses Hillary Clinton and not Bernie Sanders. Less than 3 years ago Hillary wouldn't have even supported his marriage?

Did anyone see that statement from one of the producer-writers about how the problem isn't the show, it's getting people to think it's something they want to see? You know, because all successful shows are so light and breezy. The level of self-delusion that has surrounded this project since the beginning is genuinely tragic.

Using that logic I guess as a man who wants to marry a man I can't admire Obama either, because he didn't support gay marriage until after he was was elected a second time.

Hillary has been a supporter of gay rights for many many years. Please be informed before posting if you're in another country. Thanks! I'm a supporter of Bernie and Hillary both, but get your facts right.

No, she has not been. Like virtually all other social issues, she has come around once it is politically expedient to do so. Her sudden epiphany reversing her long-stated stance that "marriage is not just a bond, but a sacred bond between a man and a woman...going back into the mists of history" happened once it was more than clear who the winning team would be. Not looking to start in on this kind of discussion on the main board.

while i generally think it's both unwise and off-topic to discuss politics on these boards, this must be said:
Bernie Sanders will not win the Electoral College; he is a self-described socialist, and the right-wing money that controls our nation's political discourse will pummel him with his own words. they will pour billions of unregulated dollars into media buys in the five to seven states that decide the Electoral math, and they will defeat him in those states. those of us who live in our comfortable Blue echo chambers won't even know it's happening (because we won't see the ads in our local markets).
my own political views are a lot closer to Bernie's than Hilary's, but I understand fully that nominating Sanders guarantees the Republicans the White House next year -- preventing that is far more important to me than how late Hilary was to the marriage equality party.

I'm with whatever2 on this and also believe it's fine if political views change over time (Hillary Clinton was originally a Republican, after all), but to swing it back to Allegiance... I thought Takei's Trump Watch was amusing at first and a clever dig for additional visibility, but it was clear that a closing show on Broadway barely registered at all in Trump's control over the media waves. Besides the fact that Takei never tagged Trump directly, the constancy started to feel very sadly desperate. That Hillary Clinton did release a formal response was very nice, but ultimately it doesn't matter--for anyone involved with the show or for her political aspirations.

Oh, I don't mean to imply that. As an intern, I fabricated rote responses for some pretty low-level theater professionals. I can't imagine any presidential candidate would take time out to respond to an invite to a closing Broadway show, or would even be aware of it.

At least from that tweet he doesn't "endorse" her. He said he invited many candidates and she (or her proxy) was the only one who bothered even sending a response. Whoever wrote it, it is a lovely note.

I don't think either Clinton has ever been willing to step out too far in front of popular opinion on gay rights.
But based on her treatment of two former students of mine who are now married and know the Clintons personally, I think her current support for gay rights is sincere. That she is a practical politician willing to set personal feelings aside when it is politically expedient should surprise nobody. Doesn't her own campaign basically say that is why she will be more effective than Sanders?

I honestly think the musical is good theater, however without and beyond a shoadow of a doubt the politics and the taunting of Trump hurt the show's box office. Keep in mind the Broadway audience is not all New York City leftists. Many Americans admire Trump for several reasons, and Takai as well intentioned as he is, has taken Trump out of context repeatedy. Trump has only called for a short suspension of Muslim immigration, not labor camps and not forever banning Muslims. Keep in mind Trump and Takai are friends and Takai was "fired" on Trump's TV show in 2011

The attack Trump gimmick has been a failure. "Alligance is the show Trump doesen't want you to see", I don't think it was a wise way to market the show. Most people on vacation going to a Broadway show are not thinking about politics, they want to see a good show. And they also fail to understand millions of people support Trump, including many Democrats and independent voters. The entire nation is not the Upper West Side of NYC, millionaires who are far left Marxists. Most Americans are Middle of the road, worknig class people, and do not look at Trump as a villian

Just for the record, it was before the election, in May of 2012. Still disgustingly late, of course.
