When Skylight and A Curious Incident won the Tony last season there was talk of New York getting a subsidised National Theatre. It's possible that British subsidised theatre could pull off the same feat again with A View From The Bridge and King Charles III, not saying it will, but if it does win the Tony the argument will intensify.
i have been to the National Theatre in Britain many time and they do about 30 shows a year, mainly plays, a lot of the time they're not great, but sometimes you see something that is awesome. If New York had one, I imagine they so more musical as this is more of an American staple.
i think it would be great if New York gained Theatre of excellence and London and New York could possible do co-productions.

i think it would be a great place to do shows like Tennessee Williams or Eugene O'Neil classics to Sondheim musicals as they're not produced on Broadway anymore.
i am in New York on Tuesday to see some great shows for 2 weeks and if you did have a National Theatre, it would make my choice of New York theatre shows harder, but that is a great problem to have.
Aside from the obvious problem of New York being a state of a country.. I would rather see a UK National Theatre equivalent doing NEW productions - taking on new artistes, new ORIGINAL works.. rather than revivals, revivals. LCT and Roundabout does enough of revivals.
The thing is, besides being an utter toad of a human being, Riedel usually has the least knowledge of the topic in the room. He doesn't usually understand the content or approach of a show, and is always completely and unfailingly socially ignorant, which makes it really infuriating when Susan can't get a word in edgewise. A definitive mansplainer; it's always painful when he has female guests. I watch the show sporadically when I really want to see a guest, because it's the only theatre talkshow we have, but it would be so much better without this hateful clown in a dadcoat.
