Wow. That was bad. I mean really, really bad. Amateurish, inept writing in the extreme, with characters conversing and arguing like no actual humans have ever conversed or argued before.
The actors (save Turner) are not skilled enough to rise above the script, with one of them succumbing to it completely. One can only think "Congratulations, Miss Logan" about Deborah Cox escaping this show.
I'm a big fan of Turner, but her talents are totally wasted here. I assume she owed a friend a favor, especially after she took over the directing duties too.
There are a few unintentional laughs peppered throughout the evening, but they're not plentiful enough to recommend seeing this for camp value. I'm sure we'll see more plays in the coming years exploring transgender issues. As this play reminds us, "It gets better," which is true by default because it can't get much worse.
Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco.
Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!
Agreed. I was so disappointed as I really hoped this would be, at least, good. Nice to see Turner, but she seemed like she couldn't exit fast enough every time she was on stage. The other three were just awful, as was the writing.
I saw this tonight. It was...interesting. Kathleen Turner is incredible but having one of our greatest living actresses on a tiny stage and a set that looked like leftovers from a community theater production of an elementary school play just seemed so weird. I cant fault any of the performers (except the doctor) because they were all very good, but the script was a hot mess. I know that it's a "trendy" topic but I felt like this show was telling the audience that if you fell in love with someone and then they decided to completely change who they were, that you'd be a bad person for not being able to or not wanting to accept that for yourself and I think that's total bullsh*t.
