Does anyone watch john Oliver's show on HBO? I'm in love with him. He's really hilarious and isn't afraid to tell the truth, because he doesn't have advertisers.

Porn isn't afraid to tell the truth.  The Duggars are terrified of the truth.

The thing I love about porn is it's always so romantic.  The guy always gets the girl, unless the girl gets the girl or the guy gets the guy.  Sometimes the girl gets 5 guys. Selfish bitch.

Isn't this still the off-topic board?

Yes, I watch John Oliver. He is excellent and now that The Daily Show and the old Colbert Show are gone, John Oliver is the best "fake news" we've got.

No, I'm sorry.  We've recently made some changes.  This is now where you reserve a table for dinner at Le Bernardin. What date did you have in mind and how many will be in your party?

Love him.  But not as much as Bill Maher.  Bill is appointment-viewing, but I find John Oliver is not.  I love that I can catch him on the reruns throughout the rest of the weekend, usually, at random opportune times.

That said, he's not "fake news."  He talks about real news items, but with strictly heavy doses of sarcasm to make his point.

"There is no use trying," said Alice; "one can't believe impossible things." "I dare say you haven't had the practice," said the Queen. "When I was your age, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast." --Alice in Wonderland

I was using "fake news" in the sense that Jon Stewart used it: the topic may be real, but the coverage of it is satirical rather than primarily informative. (Which, of course, begs the question as to whether we have "real news" any more. I'm entirely sympathetic to the argument that we do not.)

In the UK John Oliver used to own a farm and he converted his barns into luxury holiday lettings, near the Roman town of Bath. Stayed there a few times. Beautiful, the converted barn as is Bath.

Actually, I find Oliver's segments primarily VERY informative.

Whereas Stewart and Colbert were comedy shows that used the news as a starting point, John Oliver is a news program that uses comedy to keep people invested and entertained. It's probably the best thing on TV right now.

Did we all say a collective "awwwwwwww" at the end of John Oliver's return show?  Well, it wouldn't be collective since we all watch it at different times, but you know what I mean.   Getting those Days of Our Lives actors to create a new scene especially for the refugee girl from Syria almost made me tear up.  I wonder if they'll find a way to get her the clip.  I hope so.

Yes HT, I saw that on Monday night, and as much as I like that show and how Oliver delivers "truthiness" with actual investigative work and then it's the time for laughs. But I do think what they did for the young woman in the wheelchair, with the Days of Our Lives actors was so, so sweet. I haven't watched Trevor Noah yet, but John Oliver was the best on TDS and I hope the HBO show has a long long run.

Booked a return to his former farm this week for next Easter. Bristol Old Vic is doing Long Days Journey Into Night with Jeremy Irons and Lesley Manville. Just need a decent show at Theatre Royal Bath to be announced now.

I really like him, I've grown more weary of Maher.

More important is that my 15 year old has begun watching it and it has created some really great conversations between us.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I appreciate Maher's politics and I still find "New Rules" consistently funny, but I am so bored with most of the conservatives he books in order to achieve "balance". They all shout over the other guests, reciting talking points from Roger Ailes' memoranda.

One week, Maher apologized because they couldn't find a "conservative" panelist. It was one of his best shows, as the progressives assembled disagreed with one another passionately, yet managed to have a civil conversation.
