I like this suggestion but Ms. Blunt is already committed to a new major movie musical by Disney, which will be entering pre-production when filming for this begins. Extremely doubtful she would be able to do both.
Any idea on what that Disney musical is yet? I would love to see her tackle Mary Poppins but PL Travers would probably be rolling around in her grave. There where rumours Blunt was attached to Frozen 2.
No. Cannot comment on what the movie is but it's going to be huge and is based on a "franchise" that already exists within the Disney universe (it's live-action).
I bet they will cast a Disney channel star in the title role.

Lesli said she would do the film in a heart beat. Also I know it's small compared to what she usually does, but how about Octavia Spencer as Mrs. Phelps? I think she could be hilarious.
I'm sure a lot of Broadway stars would play the roles in the film adaptation in a heartbeat. It's less about that, and more about who they can attract that has name recognition/star power outside the Broadway community.
With that being said, I would honestly love to see Hugh Jackman as Trunchbull. He's such an all around actor and it would really be such a new role for him. I LOVE the Mara Wilson suggestion for Miss Honey, and to be frank, Helena Bonham Carter would make a wonderfully zany Mrs. Wormwood.
As for Matilda, I bet they'll do what Disney did for their upcoming live-action Jungle Book and just audition young hopefuls around the world. There's just not enough girls in Matilda's age range that are popular actors in Hollywood. If only this had come around when Quvenzhané was younger. It would've been such a better vehicle than Annie.

Though I do think it would be a good idea to have Miss Trunchbull played by an actor who isn't a star, because I think it would be pretty tricky to see the role played by a celebrity. The title role is a much safer bet to give to an unknown.
I don't think that Mara Wilson sings. Do we want a dubbed in Ms Honey? She should definitely be in the film one way or the other. Maybe as the acrobat - Mother of Matilda? That might seem fitting.
Ms. Honey? Zoe Deschanel? I remember she sang in Once Upon a Mattress but I don't remember the quality of her voice...
I kinda hate the idea of an animated movie. Matilda takes place in such a dark and gritty world, and the last thing I want is for it to get white washed. Also this just came to me, maybe Nathan Lane as the Trunchbull? He's got name recognition, is a legitimate broadway performer, and could do the role justice. I'm not a big Hugh Jackman fan (I think he is somewhat over hyped), and I think he is all wrong for Miss Trunchbull. He's to good looking. What about possible female Trunchbulls? Lea Delaria strikes me as an interesting choice. She's butch enough to pass as an Olympic Hammer Thrower, and she is gaining recognition through Orange is the New Black.
You bet they will get a big star as Miss Trunchbull, so Lane, DeLaria and Carvel are pipe dreams (unless someone high up really wants to give Carvel a chance). The question is whether they'll get a male or a female star. Queen Latifah comes to mind as someone who'd be spectacular.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
If they end up casting a female as Trunchbull I would like to see Missi Pyle. She has the stature to maintain the physically imposing, towering aspect of the character (especially when you add in all the camera tricks you can do to increase that effect), and has shown that she is not afraid to play the "grotesque" characters.
I know she's not a big enough star name, so it's probably unlikely to happen, but this is all fantasy and speculation at this time anyway.
If they didn't cast Edna in hairspray as a woman why would they cast miss trunchbull as a woman?
