So I guess Vogue has been doing these "73 Questions" videos for several months now. This is the first one I've seen and, I dunno, perhaps I'm easy, but I was utterly charmed.  A Vogue reporter follows Nicole Kidman throughout her beautiful Australian farm as she answers 73 questions - some slight and a bit silly and a few perhaps even a touch profound.  While I'm sure some of it is... choreographed to an extent, the interviewer and Nicole manage to at least give the illusion of spontaneity as she answers each questions with charm, candor, thoughtfulness and humor.  She also manages to make farm life look more glamorous than life in an exclusive Italian villa and, BOY, does she know how to seduce a camera.

And, yes, I know... Syria, gun control, ISIS, Bernie, Trump.

But sometimes you just need a breath of fresh air and that is exactly what this feels like.  I wish all celebrity "interviews" were this well produced.

Okay... first, those stamps were self-stick. Why did she lick it? I would say the whole thing is incredibly staged. She doesn't really think about any of the answers. It's still rather charming.

Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

I agree that it felt staged, but it was charming nevertheless. Thanks for posting it!

Her answers about witches were interesting, she's played a witch in several films and I always thought it was a coincidence, but I suppose it's been a deliberate choice. As a Bewitched fan, I think she shirked her moral obligation to make the Nora Ephron movie something that at least wouldn't induce vomiting.

Yeah, that was about as spontaneous and unrehearsed as the Judy Garland Christmas Special.

Love her dress, though.  And that farm looks like paradise.

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

Who cares if it's staged? Obviously, it's an interview set up and it's not like it's supposed to be a surprise interview. And yes, it takes choreography to pull off filming for such a long distance in one take. I'm not sure why people today are so interested in calling out things that are staged, as if it's not "spontaneous" it has no value.

You still can tell she's surprised by some of the questions, and she knows how to play with the camera so well, she just has such a gift. I saw this the other day and thought her answers were funny, honest, and interesting. It's a great interview with one of the great film actresses in the history of cinema.

Of course it is staged. She knew the questions beforehand, and considering it is a nine minute take with no cutting, a lot of time went into the blocking.

Side note: She is just wonderful.

Yes, I didn't mean to suggest it was a spontaneous interview - just that Kidman is such a natural film actress that she can give the illusion of it being so.  Of course it's staged.  I wouldn't be surprised if she's also given some of the questions in advance so that she can think about them and then, with some, not given any kind of preview so that we get that illusion of spontaneity.  And, honestly, no good celebrity interview is going to be 100% spontaneous.  If you've seen an interview you've loved on Letterman, Fallon, Carson, Parkinson etc - it's because a producer has done a great pre-interview with the guest.  And, some of the absolute WORST celeb interviews you've  seen have been the "spontaneous" and unprepared ones.  Where, say, the guest has refused a pre-interview because s/he thinks s/he's a naturally great story teller with a flawless sense of humor.

I was just fascinated by this on so many levels.  I've worked in media for years and seen so many legacy brands struggle with the digital disruption and this is honestly one of the smartest and most well executed - forgive me for using this term - brand extensions I've seen in that space.  And, honestly, if you're interviewing people who have made a very good living working in front of the camera, why not actually, you know, use that skill they've spent years developing?

I went back and watched some (I refuse to watch the Matt Lauer one) of the older "73 Questions" vids - with Anna Wintour, Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Jessica Parker.  They're all very entertaining, though none is as seamless and charming as the Kidman one.

The Wintour one was painfully bad.  We got to watch her back walking down hallways as she shot out a stream of mono-toned one-word answers.  They didn't even try to pretend this one wasn't staged.  Though I must say, Anna looked better than I've ever seen her.

Loved Reese Witherspoon!

Art has a double face, of expression and illusion.

Kidman's is the best of them. She nails it. Amy Adams, whom I adore, looks like a deer caught in the headlights as does Sarah Jessica Parker, whom I also adore. Reese Witherspoon is really "on" but fares well. It's still an interesting concept and a fun, fresh way to conduct an interview.
