After her amazing performance as Kate in Wild Party at Encores, I asked Joaquina what she would be doing next. She said she would be in the Color Purple this fall! She said the role, but I forget. It was either Doris or Darlene. So excited to see her get work so soon after seeing her kill it in The Wild Party.
There are actually 2 lead female roles not yet cast. Nettie and Squeak. But Doris is also one of the "Church" ladies names in TCP. So if she said Doris I would believe her
I would hardly call Squeak a leading role. And the Church Ladies names are Doris, Darlene, and Jarene, so it definitely sounds like she's playing one of those roles.
This production has structured the three Church Ladies as the female principal understudies, so I would imagine Kalukango is also covering Celie if she is indeed in the show.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
I'm really excited/interested to see this more concentrated production. Having only 18 actors and 12 chairs. And no moving set. As opposed to the 30 plus in the last production. Did anyone see this in London?

She would make an amazing Celie. I hope she is.
