Sonia Manzano is retiring from the show. 
I didn't realize she had been on for so long. Or I either just lost count of how long it really has been since I watched in the 80s and early 90s.

I still remember the episode where she and Luis got married. I didn't get the concept of actors when I was 3, so I really thought they were married. That also means I didn't know they were not Maria and Luis away from the show.

She was the original Sonia in the original production of Godspell. She did Godspell and Sesame Street simultaneously in the early '70s.

This is going to sound REALLY dumb, and I fully admit to that, but for some reason I just always assumed they just used their real names, and that Maria's name was Maria, and Bob's name was Bob, etc.
Isn't Maria's husband still on the show? How will they explain her absence while he's still around?
