I'm visiting Toronto for the first time from Brussels, Belgium. Huge theaterfan here. I arrive on july 4th and stay till 11th.
I found out that kinky boots and newsies are playing when i'm in town. Also Mary Poppins but i'm not sure. I also found out about TOTIX. Is that a good way to buy tickets or is there a cheaper way trough discounts (or rushtickets like on Broadway)
Has anyone seen Carousel on the stratfort festival. Would love to see that too. Shaw festival has some great show as well.
many thing to do, not much time. Would love to hear some insider tips from local theaterfans.
T.O. Tix here is not like TKTS in NYC - you won't get discounts to either Kinky Boots or Newsies there. I'm not aware of any rush tickets for either of those shows at this time. You'll likely end up paying face value - even the day of.
I've seen Carousel at the Stratford Festival. It's a great production, though the material itself is dated and not necessarily to my personal taste.
You probably won't find a Kinky discount as it's just opening now. You can use code NEWSZOO for Newsies (from Travelzoo) for a bit of a discount there. Mary Poppins is an amateur production, if that is a consideration for you. Stratford's website has a deal for Carousel. There's a $29 sale on right now until June 26th.
Coach Bob knew it all along: you've got to get obsessed and stay obsessed. You have to keep passing the open windows. (John Irving, The Hotel New Hampshire)
Sadly, Carousel is not yet outdated. The issues of domestic violence that it raises and addresses are unfortunately still with us today, and many people have to deal with them in their own lives even now. Like any other show - some will relate more than others, but the issues are still current today, even if the specific setting of the show is not. With that said, I have seen many better productions of this show over the last few years, though not near Toronto. If you haven't seen it before, it is certainly worth seeing it once. If you have seen a good production of it before, this might not be the best production to rival your memories of it. The actor playing Nettie in this production, however, gives a great performance overall and sings "You'll Never Walk Alone" beautifully - that for me was the highlight of this production.
Discount codes for Mary Poppins and other Lower Ossington Theatre productions are typically mailed out every week if you join their email list. The most recent one expired yesterday, but they will probably announce another one in a couple of days for next weekend.
