Well, it is about time for another Gypsy revival. Maybe we can get La Cage and Follies as well since we're getting Fiddler and take care of all of them in one season.

Love her, wish we were getting her as Mrs. Lovett instead. Not a huge fan of the new recording but maybe it's like Daly and it has to be seen live to be appreciated.

I'm all for it. I find her "Everything's Coming Up Roses" to be pretty brilliant on the cast recording. Right up there with LuPone for me. I like that she;s using the Lansbury keys, not straining and croaking like Tyne Daly.
I think they would need a big star for Louise though.
I saw Imelda Staunton in Gypsy twice and it was the greatest performance I've seen in a musical in a very long time. She's way better than LuPone, but I feel it's not time for another revival. And it's a shame, because Imelda's performance is truly iconic and her Rose's Turn is truly something out of this world. Probably because she's the first since Daly to be firt an actress and then a singer... but she sings it way better than Daly!
And I totally agree with what Sondheim said about her performance! When you hear Imelda singing Everything's Coming Up Roses it's like you've never heard it before.

I think her delivery of the dialogue that leads into the song is chilling. Still for me LuPone's performance of that song on the recording delivers on both the acting and singing front in ways that will be tough to match. Maybe I need to give this new recording more of a chance though. I do love her so much as Mrs. Lovett.

No, I saw Daly live. Her acting was outstanding. But when she opened her mouth to sing, well let's just say she didn't have the ability to produce the best sound.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
I believe the entire Daly production is on Youtube. The vocals are indeed pretty horrifing at times, her voice is unpleasant and has no vibrato, but her acting does appear to be pretty damn fabulous.
If this happens I would be very interested to see the recoupment schedule they devised for it. It's hard to imagine how they could recoup in 12 weeks without cutting some major corners.
Perhaps she could rotate Sweeney and Gypsy? Would love to see her in both and I the new recording. I think she sings it well. Not a fan of the actress playing Louise though. Nothing however will beat the original Merman recordings - not Peters, Lupone, Lansbury - certainly not Daly.

That's really an excellent point. For a show like GYPSY, it would have to be a concert style production to recoup, and even that would seem like a stretch at only 12 weeks.
I was just thinking the same thing because The Gallery Players in Brooklyn was supposed to produce Gypsy in the spring and the rights were just pulled... Could be...
