Has anyone seen Significant Other at Laura Pels?
I really do not enjoy being negative about theatre. I saw Bad Jews, also by Joshua Harmon. I found the characters in that to be immature, but at least funny. I also enjoyed the writing.
After seeing Significant Other I believe that this young playwright is only able to write immature characters. Significant Others is too long first of all. The usher said it was 2 hours with an intermission, the press says it's 2 hours with intermission.. it ran almost 2 and a half hours with intermission. The play doesn't say very much about life. It's basically over two hours of a young Gay guy whining that he doesn't have a boyfriend. It gets very tedious and any drama that erupts... like in the second act big fight scene... amounts to two 18 year old brats yelling at each other. (although they are supposed to be 29) These characters have a lot of growing up to do.
There is the Grandmother played by Barbara Barrie who is depressed and wants to kill herself. At the end she explains that life is a long book with many chapters. Wow! That is really ground breaking theatre!
I think everyone is good in it. The boy carries the show to a great extent. Played by Gideon Glick he does an ok job, but he doesn't really have the acting chops to carry it. The part should have been cast by a young actor with a name.... and the acting chops to pull it off.
Bad Jews worked to a great part because Tracee Chimo was such a powerhouse. She certainly elevated the material. Here there is no Tracee Chimo to do that. Mr. Glick is not Tracee Chimo.
Significant Other exposes the playwright for what he is. A very YOUNG, talented, writer who has a gift for dialogue but not the life experience needed. I am sure in ten years from now, he will be writing better plays.

Thank you ClydeBarrow. I am sorry I missed that post.
The people on that thread seemed to enjoy it more than me. I liked Bad Jews much better, but it also had Tracee Chimo as a force of nature pushing it forward.
