what i am asking for here are other suggestions, and what should i see and shouldn't i see while in NYC?

I would highly recommend Fun Home to anyone who will be in NYC and enjoys musicals. It is so deeply moving, and has an excellent score and book and production even if you do not personally connect with the material. Everyone in it is giving a top notch performance.

Hamilton won't have started previews yet.

And I agree, FUN HOME should be at the top of your list. Hand to God and Curious Incident are also wonderful.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Fun Home. Easily. Fun Home. First.

An American in Paris is also a good choice.

Something Rotten

Did not like Fun Home but many do so this is your call

Doubt The Visit will still be open by the time you get here . OTT is a good choice.

Fun Home and An American in Paris.   Both extraordinary! recommendations for shows when i come to NYC in July

Also, please don't stop in the middle of a cross walk to look up or take pictures, or walk all slow.  Us New Yorkers hate that sh*t. recommendations for shows when i come to NYC in July

I think The Visit (If it's still running) and On the Twentieth Century can't be missed. Two career defining performances. Also I recommend On the Town if you haven't seen it yet.

I would skip An American in Paris and see On The 20th Century instead. AiP was beautiful (finally saw it last night) but doesn't come close to OTTC. I personally prefered Somerthing Rotten over Fun Home, but SR will go on tour, so that might be something to take into consideration there. So will King and I, but I'm just gonna assume you want to see the Broadway cast.

I would definitely recommend "On the Town".  Great performances all around (especially from the grossly underrated Tony Yazbeck) and wonderful dancing throughout.  I'm still thinking about that dream ballet... Plus, because the Lyric is (sadly) never full, you can likely get a great seat at a great price (I got one of the $20 lottery seats via TodayTix for a 1pm Sunday matinee).

I'm probably one of the few who found "On the 20th Century" to be just okay.  My friend and I went in really excited -- it was both our first times seeing Kristin Chenoweth live -- and each of us independently left the theater thinking, "Well that was...cute" and not much more.  Kristin did not surprise beyond her typical shenanigans, and Peter Gallagher was disappointingly underwhelming.  While I will admit that there were some great numbers ("Life is Like a Train" and "Babbette" come to mind), they were few and far between.  I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I rested my eyelids a bit during the second act from boredom tiredness...which I never do at musicals on Broadway.

I was going to recommend "The King and I" next, but I just saw that you had the good judgment to include it already on your itinerary. recommendations for shows when i come to NYC in July You won't be disappointed.

Whatever you choose, have a blast!  As an out-of-towner myself, I can relate to the excitement of a planned Broadway trip.
