It all depends on the Tonys & if it gets a bump from any wins it might get
It might get the sentimental vote - even though Chita deserves it on performance alone. It might also get score as it is K/E last work . I do not think it is the best they ever wrote but it is still a solid one
If it does well with its performance on the Tonys and the awards themselves, it should get some bump. Tourists do not care about the K/E 's last score or that Chita is a living legend. It is still a dark piece and a tough sell no matter what. I would love for it to win Best Musical but doubt that will happen.
If it does not win any, hopefully it can run through the summer. I do not think anyone ever thought this would get a long run no matter what.
I think it will stay open until June 7 no matter what so you should be OK.
See THE VISIT, but see FUN HOME, too. Anyway, I think they'd be foolish to close it before the Tony Awards, but the numbers do look dire. I don't understand why it's doing THIS badly. There were some nice reviews and it's been marketed well enough. Are all the matinee ladies and blue-haireds that want to see Chita dead or something?
I was at the matinee last week via Tdf ticket sat in the mezz. Was able to move a few rows back and sat in a totally empty row center. Mezz was half full.
"The only other musical in recent memory darker or as dark as this was Sideshow. We know how that turned out."
Excellent and thoughtful comparison. By the way, you mentioned you had medical tests yesterday. Hope they went well. I heard they did a brain scan on you and found nothing.
To brdway to each his own. The Mrs and I saw The Visit because we used to care but no longer do. If a show is a hit great if not we do not care. We would rather see a Broadway legend then some of these shows the elite here decree a masterpiece and call you a baby cannibal if you like anything by Wildhorn and Bubble and Shopenhamer. It is not worth it so we no longer say anything than say something and be attacked.
FN I agree. I saw Hamilton early in previews and thought it was just okay. I loved In The Heights. There was great stuff in Hamilton (BDJ) but not enough to warrant all the hype. I hope it is tighter on Broadway.
I do think a lot of Chita's fan base must literally be dead.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
