Since there will only be three nominees for Best Musical Revival this year ( only five opened) everyone would assume The King And I and On The Twentieth Century are shoo ins. The third spot would go to either Side Show, On The Town or Gigi.  Based on reviews alone I would think Gigi is out of the running. Based on reviews its a close call between Side Show and On The Town - maybe close enough to qualify for four nominations this year?

I don't really understand why people think that Side Show has a shot at a nomination over On The Town.  Side Show has long since closed and it received very mixed reviews.  Yes the Times gave it a positive review, but the rest were a bit of a mix.  On The Town is still open and received across the board positive reviews.  It's really no contest.

Yeah, On the Town is a given. 20th Century, King and I, and On the Town will all be nominated. I say it's between Side Show and Gigi for the last spot.

Wait, we only get three nominees this year?

The three will pretty obviously be On the Town, On the Twentieth Century, and King & I. All still running, all very well-received by critics, all very well-liked by the industry.

What everyone else said.

I love Side Show, but it's just not gonna make the cut.

The rules actually say:

Where there are five or fewer eligible shows in a Best Show
category, at the Tony Nominating Meeting, the Nominating
Committee will be instructed to cast one vote each for three
eligible shows as nominees on his/her secret ballot. Such ballot
shall be collected and tabulated by a representative of the
Accounting Firm. The three eligible shows with the highest
number of votes will automatically be designated as the nominees
in such category. A fourth nominee shall be added to the category
in the event that the Accounting Firm determines that the
difference in votes between the third highest-ranked show and the
fourth highest-ranked show is three votes or less.

So if there is any sort of contest in the room, it could be four.

Right, but do you really expect there to be a fewer than three vote difference between Side Show and one of those other three shows? I don't see it happening.

I don't think it's likely, but since the OP did not explain it at all, I'd figured I'd share what the actual rules say.

What the hell are you talking about?! Side Show got some very glowing reviews! I think if the nominators feel a little more sympathy towards it after it closed at such a monumental loss, it may end up getting the fourth slot (if it receives enough votes).

^Unfortunately, I feel Side Show will be left out and for other nominations as well

Everyone in town told the producers they were dumb for trying to revive this at the time they did. Everyone knew it would close in a hot second. I doubt there will be much sympathy towards it. At least not enough to beat out OTT.

The King and I will win. As far as nominations go, they will nominate On the Town over Side Show to try to help them out a bit. I can see Gigi being nominated though.

bjh2115  your being disingenuous in suggesting Side Show got mixed reviews, it went toe to toe with OTT getting positive reviews from a majority of the reviewers.  I will give you that if you rated all the reviews On The Town did better but Side Show got a lot of brilliant reviews and in many of their eyes they were on par with each other. One was able to keep trying to find an audience and wait out the winter the other not so lucky with their landlord. I'm happy to see its grosses picking up with the weather and the tourists but to date it has probably just covered its cost on average over its 30 weeks - not sure how long it can keep that up without some major award wins which now seem unlikely. If the nominators are business based it will give the award to the show that still runs. If they are artistically based depending on how the nominators felt about either show it could go either way.

He's not being disingenuous. He just linked to a host of mixed reviews- that comprises the majority of theatre reviews now.

The interpretation of the reviews aside, Side Show is a very distant memory, having closed back in January. I think it's highly improbable that it has any chance at a nomination when On The Town got at least comparable reviews, is currently running after fighting out a tough winter season, and can benefit from the nomination(s).
