with the reviews, ticket sales, and popularity of The 20th Century, is it too early to predict that round about will put it in another Broadway house after July 5th? Does anybody know if Chenoweth and Gallagher have possibilities of contract extensions or are they previously committed to other projects and wouldn't be able or interested in keeping the show going? I'm rooting so loudly for this rivival and wouldn't a tony win for best rivival put great hope for its continued run.

"is it too early to predict that round about will put it in a note Broadway house"

Is this supposed to say another Broadway house? Why would they do that? No chance. They might extend but no way will they move. This isn't a Cabaret level hit for them, even.

Gallagher signed on to a new TV show earlier this year, so his availability would probably be limited. I wouldn't be surprised if we got an extension of a few weeks, but I don't think anything beyond that will occur.

Not to discredit Gallagher, but I think an extension would be more contingent upon Chenoweth's availability than his. I could see them just bumping up his understudy should he decide to depart before any possible extension.

Oh, I totally agree. They could do 3 weeks without him. Without Chenoweth...not so much.

I loved this show!  Everything about it.  Chenoweth, Karl, Gallagher, Wilson, the music, the choreography, the lighting, the sets.   Everything.

Why would they move? The American Airlines is available for another few weeks beyond the official closing date and since this show is a Roundabout production they can't just move into any other Broadway house. It would have to be one of their own and no other is available. But again, why?

I've said this in the other topic about an extension, I know that Roundabout had an extension in the back of their head long before they even opened (purely based on advanced sales), so I would assume that they brought that up with the actors and it's been in the back of their minds.

Kristin is doing concerts across the country all through the fall, but on a pretty lose schedule, and the first one (right now) isn't until the first weekend of August. And even that is just one weekend, which she could easily take of from the show (she's done that during Promises), and the next dates after that (from what I currently know) isn't until September. So I think she would be available for an extra few weeks if they decide to extend.

KC may not want to extend beyond a few weeks. She is always telling everyone that she has to live like a nun and must rest her voice between performances.

Kristin is now a middle-aged woman who fractured her skull not long ago. I'm hoping that she makes it through the scheduled run.

Well, they can't do longer than a few weeks anyway. They next show needs the theater by September.

All I was saying is that her schedule should allow the rumored 4-8 week extension. I can see 4 weeks happening, I don't know about 8. But that's the maximum they could do anyway.

Also, Kristin hasn't missed a single performance so far, even though she had/has a fractured rip. Peter on the other hand missed a few even after his recovery (I think to rest to stay in shape). I don't think we need to worry about her.

 FYI

Hello,

I’m responding to your inquiry about a possible On the 20th Century extension. Unfortunately we have no plans to extend the show as of now. That being said, there is a definite possibility that it will extend depending on Tony nominations, but we can’t confirm anything yet. Feel free to keep checking our website, or join our email club so you can get updates if the show does get extended.

Why, Hated this show. Was so bored at intermission, I wanted to leave. Husband made me stay (he is a huge KC fan, I cannot stand her). Dated and over acted. Best part of the show was when an alarm went off down stairs and they had to stop the show and the actors did some improv with the audience. YAWN!!!!

This...but I can one up you: my husband INSISTED we leave.  My love for my husband was reaffirmed the night we left at intermission.

Not true at all. It would transfer as a commercial production a la 39 Steps, so any theater is far game.

Ha! I was at that same show. Except all my friends and I enjoyed ourselves immensely...as did the vast majority of the audience as evidenced by the laughs throughout the show and the enthusiasm during the bows.

This is the thing with this forum. Why would you even post in this topic? Nothing you said is any way relevant to the question here. If you want to express your dislike of the show, go to the regular show topic. Okay, you didn't like it and that's fine. everybody has their own opinion, right? But the show got rave reviews all around, is getting great word of mouth and is playing at almost 100% capacity. It's doing really well. That's the facts independent of my or your personal opinion, and that's why this topic was brought up.

That being said, BroadwayNYC2, has a Roundabout production ever been transferred to a commercial one? I really don't know, but not recently I don't think? Even the really successful productions like Anything Goes and Cabaret "just" extended their runs, but remained part of Roundabout for their entire run.

Just seems unlikely I guess. And even IF they were to do that, the plan would surely have to extend the run by several more month of even make it open ended, which I just don't see happening.

As did 1776 (in one of the most ill-advised transfers ever- who thought that show would work in the Gershwin of all places??).

I would actually be surprised if this production closed on their current closing date. An extension seems imminent to me.

I'm sure the producers were simply waiting for that post in order to make a decision.  No matter how well a show is selling and the demand for tickets, it's the opinion of this person that decides whether a show extends or closes.

KC is also going on tour after she is done with OTTC.  I know she comes to Wolf Trap near where I live August 28th, so even if they do extend it won't be by too much.  I'm not exactly sure when her tour kicks off, though.

All aspects of the show have been highly praised. I saw the show and believe all the praise was deserved. Would a transfer or extension depend entirely on Kristin Chenoweth's availability? Surely there are other sopranos who can do comedy. After all, the original production continued to do well after Judy Kaye took over, and many (including me) thought she was as good as or better than Madeline Kahn in the role.

As noted previously, The 39 Steps was officially transferred as a commercial run after its initial run at the American Airlines Theatre.

That being said, that was a much smaller show and therefore less cost-prohibitive to move than On the Twentieth Century would be.

The trouble is finding one with Chenoweth's name recognition. This show may not sell without a star, but it would definitely be interesting for them to attempt to replace her. Perhaps if they win best revival that wouldn't even be a concern, which could lead to a situation similar to Stephanie J. Block taking over for Sutton in Anything Goes. Granted, that example wasn't quite on the same magnitude, but it's something I could see happening should they find a way to work around the availability of the space.

Hmmm, I think it's doubtful that the show would go on without Kristin. According to Scott Ellis the revival only happened because Kristin agreed to play the part, and one of the reasons it hasn't been revived ever is that you have to find someone who can play Lily. It takes a very specific combination of comedic and operatic chops to pull that role of. Plus, since the show itself isn't very well know, they do need a name to pull in audiences I think. Maybe if they brought in a name-star for Oscar or Bruce, but these are tough parts too and Hugh Jackman (who was in an early reading) didn't want to do it.

I think we all (or most anyway) agree that an extension of a few weeks seems very likely, and following that email from Roundabout we should hear about that shorty after the Tony noms are announced. But anything longer than 8 weeks seems unlikely.

Promisespromises2, see my first post in this topic re:Kristin's schedule. It's not really a "tour" at this point, "just" 3-4 concerts every month between August and May '16. There will likely be more dates, but it doesn't look like a tour in the traditional sense.
