Hey all,
Quick question. Planning a trip to NYC next year, and I plan to stay in the city at a cheap hotel (any suggestions for cheap hotels?) and I would like to leave the car in the northern part of the city and just take the train in. Any suggestions on some good places to do that? And if I leave the car there for 2 days what rates am I looking at? Thanks for your help!

A friend used to leave her car in one of the Metro North parking lots and take the train in. As I recall, there was one with a mall near the station. I'm sorry I don't remember which one. Maybe Stamford? I hope others here will be more helpful! Did you check TripAdvisor for hotel recommendations?

There IS one relatively inexpensive hotel in midtown that has FREE parking. (I believe it is the only hotel that has free parking at all.)

The Travelinn.

I do know their price GREATLY varies depending on when you are going -- but that won't be any different anywhere in the city. If it's high at the travel inn -- it'll be high everywhere.

Here's a link to the hotel. It's not fancy, but it's always clean. Even has a pool.

You are right about that hotel. Just thought I would check because I might visit NYC in June and it was $250 a night. Not that bad but it was only $130 a night for a weekend day in March.

I'm not quite understanding your post, so let me ask some questions.

You plan to leave your car in the northern part of the city? Why the northern part of the city? Are you talking about Washington Heights or the Bronx or what?

Why are you bringing a car? Is NYC a stop on a roadtrip or is NYC the only destination?

Are you choosing to stay outside the city and take the train in every day?

I live in Indiana so we're driving and not flying. I'm a college student so i'm looking to save money as much as I can. Trying to find a cheap hotel for 1-2 nights and don't want to worry about bringing a car in to the city. Friend told me it would be easy to leave it some place like Yonkers or something and ride train in.

Check post about Travel Inn, believe it had free parking. I checked the rates at two different times of the year and you can see when it may be real cheap for NYC hotel.

Couple of suggestions -- If you don't need your car in the City, don't drive in and have to pay bridge or tunnel tolls. You can park in New Jersey and take a train or bus in. For example, you can park at Metropark and take the train into Manhattan; there may be cheaper options in NJ. As far as hotels, use Priceline. If you stick to 2 stars or above, the quality will be fine, and you can pay as little as 1/2 the going rate. You can bid for hotels in Times Square, Manhattan West, Central Park South, or Hell's Kitchen and you'll be close to everything.

My best recommendation for a hotel would be Hotwire.com. I've never used the service until last month. I'm going down for 3 nights at the end of April and I couldn't find a hotel for cheaper than $250 a night, which just wasn't in my price range. I went on there and searched. They don't tell you the hotel but they give you the stars, what district it's in and how much it is a night. I guess this is how they are more discounted from what I've read. Long story short, I ended up being able to book The Row NYC for $140 a night (which is right in Times Square to boot) and on a different website, it was going for more than $100 a night. I've also heard great things about the hotel. So maybe give that s try :)

I recommend Priceline; specifically the Name Your Price thing. My mom goes to NYC every couple of years or so, and the last few times she's managed to get a 4-star hotel stay for around $100 a night. Just be specific about which area you want, and specify star level you're comfortable with (she'll only stay in 4-star hotels in NYC because of roaches and such).

We always stay in Stamford,CT. Some really nice hotels (the Hampton Inn has a great breakfast buffet every day, free for guests). The Metro North into Grand Central is about $20 round trip, and there is a huge parking garage connected to the station where you'll pay about $10 a day. Even if you go in and out of the city multiple times, it is still cheaper (a LOT CHEAPER) than staying in the city.

I park in Hamilton, NJ and take the train in. There's a garage there with plenty of spots, and trains run rather frequently. I'd highly recommend looking into it.

FYI - The Row was formerly the Milford Plaza so the rooms are very small.
