Far too many shows with performances beginning soon appeal to me. I'm going to be in NYC a long weekend or two in April and need some guidance on what you'd cross off this list, based on what you're hearing about them pre-previews. If a show isn't on the list I've either seen it, don't plan on seeing it, or it doesn't begin previews until later. Thank you!
I'd cross of Curious Incident purely because I think it will be on Broadway for a while. It's in an open run and doing very good business. If you go to NYC even semi-regularly, you can definitely afford to wait to see it.
On the Town is a fun show from what I've heard, but not particularly memorable. The plot is weak. I would cross it off, but you should also understand that it's probably not going to be around much longer, so if you really do want to see it, now's the time.
As for what you SHOULD see, Fun Home and Heidi Chronicles have been getting fantastic word-of-mouth from their previews. Both will be in the running for Tonys. I'd recommend trying to see the two of those if at all possible.
BROADWAY: The Cripple of Inishmaan, This is Our Youth, If/Then, Hedwig and the Angry Inch (x3), Cabaret (x2), The Real Thing, A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, Chicago, Les Miserables (x2) Disgraced, Finding Neverland, On the Twentieth Century, Wolf Hall Part I, On the Town, Fun Home; TOURING: Jekyll and Hyde, The Book of Mormon; LOCAL: The Twilight Zone, Anne Boleyn, Death and the Maiden, The Lying Kind, Chorus Line, Stupid F**king Bird
I think you will regret not seeing The King and I as well as The Visit. I am seeing those two shows as well as Gigi and An American in Paris this year.
I would cross off either Honeymoon in Vegas (blah, a lot of these other shows, even if they aren't perfect, are trying to accomplish so much more and are more meaningful to the theatrical canon). I'm not a fan of the source material of Dr. Zhivago so I would cross that off for myself but if you enjoy it, then it's probably worth seeing.
Having seen Honeymoon in Vegas, I would cross it off the list. While it isn't by any means a complete catastrophe of a show, I wouldn't consider it a priority with so much else to see.
Based on buzz, I would also cross off Dr. Zhivago and Gigi.
Don't cross off "The Curious Incident of the Dog In the Nighttime." Sure, it will be around for a while, but Alex Sharp is probably already getting other offers and you should try to see him while you can.
Ignore anyone who tells you to miss 'Curious Incident', it's terrific. Also see 'Honeymoon', you will be pleasantly surprised. Drop from your list, On the Town, On the Town & On the Town. Really it's dreadful, apart from the dancing.
Here's a piquant question: How many shows are you planning to fit into your "long weekends"? Two? Four? That would help me narrow it down to what I consider absolutely essential.
I'm going to try to squeeze in at least eight shows... I hope. Normally, I would have seen some of the shows already, those that have been playing for a while, but between weather, illness, work and family I haven't been able to make my usual weekend trips for quite a while. So I'm playing catch-up.
If you're going to squeeze in eight shows, there are four on your list that I would consider un-missable: FUN HOME; THE KING AND I; THE VISIT; and SKYLIGHT.
I've seen THE HEIDI CHRONICLES. It's a superb production, but I don't know if I'd call it un-missable.
I didn't love CURIOUS INCIDENT, though many people did.
HAND TO GOD was very well-received Off-Broadway. I didn't see it, but several friends whose opinions I value raved.
I would not waste my time on GIGI (this production isn't very good); HONEYMOON IN VEGAS; IT SHOULDA BEEN YOU; or DR ZHIVAGO.
The Visit ------------------------------------------------------------------
What I wouldn't see and why:
An American in Paris- Mostly dance oriented. Does seem like it's really lifted the source material any higher to justify making it into a musical.
The Audience- I hear Helen Mirren is amazing, but the play is so-so
Dr. Zhivago- Based on your taste I'd choose between this and King and I
Gigi- So many revivals, see some new stuff
Honeymoon in Vegas- Not worth the time or money
It Shoulda Been You - Might be fun, but you can see better stuff
The King and I -This has been revived several times, will again. I'm sure this revival will be great, but it's still something you've seen before. Between this and Dr. Zhivago, based on your tastes.
Do NOT cross Honeymoon off your list. It is the best musical I've seen in years-- reminiscent of Broadway in its Golden Years Hay day!
I do not understand the hate for it on this board. Some people would rather sit through musicals about manic depression or depressed lesbians (Fun Home) which I hated than have an uplifting Broadway experience complete with a great score; fun plot and the quest for not being haunted by guilt. It brought a big smile to my face
What passes for musicals nowadays -- manic depression, depressed lesbians. silly Spelling Bees and What might have happenned if then is beyond me.
Go see Honeymoon. You won't be sorry. Brantley was right!
Goldenboy....."haunted by guilt" ? Depression and lesbians are not topics necessarily to feel guilty about. The stories are sad but also have a factor of truth. For some people theatre and films are a place to escape the horrors of reality. And for others its a medium to send a message or describe a narrative. And OP is obviously someone who is deeply invested in the theatre scene; I'm sure they're more worried about quality of the show + proper scheduling rather than 'fun, uplifting' content.
By the way, I find the song Friki Friki from Honeymoon extremely offensive as someone who's actually Asian. So feel guilty about that lol
Here is how I would rank your choices from best (Tier 1) to worst (Tier 3):
Tier 1 Curious Incident (It is excellent ... creative, unique and memorable) Fun Home King and I Something Rotten The Audience The Visit
Tier 2 Dr. Zhivago Skylight Hand To God Honeymoon In Vegas (I liked it, a solid 7.5/10) An American In Paris Gigi
Tier 3 It Shoulda Been You The Heidi Chronicles On The Town (Unfortunately I saw it. I thought it was horrible. 2/10) On The Town On The Town
And inspired by lotiloti's genius, I enthusiastically voted to "cross it off" three times, because I feel it is 3x as bad as anything else on your list.
