I've been curious about how off-Broadway and off-off Broadway shows have fare at the Drama Desks throughout its history, and it seems like the answer is: not too well. From what I can tell, lots of non-Broadway shows seem to be get nominated, but they rarely win.

I'm wondering if this year might be different. I'll bet Hamilton has a pretty good shot at Best Musical this year, especially since Fun Home is ineligible. I also wonder if Iceman Cometh has a shot at winning best revival of a play? I don't know if stuff from St. Ann's ever gets nominated, and it probably doesn't have a shot against Curious Incident, but Let the Right One In has been getting so much buzz and great reviews, does it have a chance of being nominated?

I just moved to NY this year for school, so before this year I've never been very aware of the theatre scene beyond Broadway (plus a few of the well-known off-Broadway theatre companies). Because of that, what I'm saying might sound kind of ignorant. Has this been a good season for non-Broadway shows? Or is it just my perception since I just moved here?

Probably just your perception. The last few years have been excellent for Off Broadway. As far as awards, Hamilton will do well.

The issue is many Off and Off Off shows don't invite the full membership. A good example is HAMILTON. If they only invite the nominators how can the membership vote for the show.

Fun Home beat out all its Broadway competition at the Drama Desk Awards last year before it got a Broadway transfer.

"Mostly, I loved the size of these people's emotions. Nobody has emotions this size anymore. Outsized emotions. Operatic emotions. Kushemski and Vanda are like Tristan and Isolde, they're Paolo and Francesca. Nobody's in total thrall like this anymore. Nobody's overcome by passion like this, or goes through this kind of rage." They invited the membership.

Actually, Off Broadway has been doing way better than Broadway in the last years

Off-broadway may do well in the nomination count, but I don't really think they have a fair shot at the major awards. And while Fun Home did get quite a few nominations last year, it received no awards. To me, that show was the ultimate test - in a slow Broadway season, a universally praised off-broadway show still couldn't manage to win.

Corine, we get it. You're a bitter Drama Desk voter who didn't get a ticket to Hamilton. Get over it.

How can you vote for the show? If you buy a ticket. Don't expect to be given everything. Updated On: 3/6/15 at 10:12 AM

Some well-received Off Broadway plays like The Mystery of Love and Sex or Our Lady of Kibeho could end up with Best Play nominations.

I don't know what shot it would have in the competitive categories, but it would be great to see The Iceman Cometh be rewarded for their entire ensemble. If I'm correct, the Drama Desks always honor one ensemble every season, and I think the Iceman cast is more than deserving- every single person was so excellent that it seems almost wrong to single out one actor over another.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

Bitter? I was answering his question about the DD. I am not bitter. If I wanted to see it I would buy a ticket but it is not on the top of my list. I get invited to a lot and I buy a lot as well. Hip hop is not my thing.

I will probably have to buy a ticket to see Derek Hough in The Spring Spectacular. When Forever Tango played on Broadway I bought five tickets. I got a pair once and saw it five additional times. Dance is my thing.

Well, even if it was "your thing", you'd be outta luck on tickets, so, I guess it worked out.

Very smart people I trust said it felt like they were seeing a landmark play, like audiences must've felt when they saw Sweeney Todd when it first appeared.

So, why would a Drama Desk voter or a theater website curator have any interest in seeing what is shaping up to be a major musical theater event?

Corine your comments just reinforced what I already knew about Drama Desk voters.

Except Fun Home didn't win anything at the Drama Desk Awards last year.

I would have gone if I was invited.I was not invited and I wont spend 200 plus dollars to see a hip hop musical. I can't afford it. If they invite me I will go. I happen to love Lin Manuel Miranda.
