I've been listening to the new Side Show Cast Recording a lot lately and have been thinking about what was going on in the scenes when these songs were happening. I remember being somewhat touched in Act 2 during the "Great Big Wedding Show" scene, when Jake is approached by three of the former attractions from the Side Show. I remember it was the Fortune Teller, the Geek and one another who I don't remember! Can anybody tell me who the other freak is? I know it's such a random and stupid question but it's killing me!
I love that scene but I really don;t get why they chose them to end up *SPOLIER* being bake shop workers. *END SPOILER* It really doesn't go with the rest of the show.
**SPOILER**The three of them ending up working in a bakery is set up nicely in the first act by having The Fortune Teller bake and present a birthday cake for the twins early on.
Cake is a good device since if you like the messages in Sideshow chances are you like cake, and owning a bake shop where the public does not see the freak bakers in the back but only a belting Fortune Teller behind the counter waiting on you was a clever bit of writing on Bill's part. **END SPOILER**
Thanks for the correction, DoodleNYC. The Geek bakes the birthday cake.
"Carson has combined his passion for helping children with his love for one of Cincinnati's favorite past times - cornhole - to create a unique and exciting event perfect for a corporate outing, entertaining clients or family fun."
So if a show closes no one is allowed to ask a question about the production, script or score or the CD that just came out? I guess a lot of BW threads can be shorter now if we play by that rule.
"I still want to know how cake and Side Show are related!"
Because the biggest fans of the show are the chubby high school theatre girls (and gays) who know they are so talented, but always lose out on the lead roles to the pretty and popular kids. High school is so unfair and they know as soon as they get to college they can declare their theatre major and magically be recognized as the stars they are. In the mean time they sit at home eating cake and listening to "Who Will Love Me as I Am?" and "I Will Never Leave You" on an endless loop.
Like a pound cake in the oven Or angel cake on the mill If I stood on my tiptoes I could peek over the sill And see the bakery all lit up With cream cakes to fill
I will never leave you I will never go away We were meant to share each babka Beside it is where I will stay Evermore and always I'll be scarfing them down For I will never leave you
I don't necessarily think there has to be a "take away message" in terms of there being a moral.
Side Show, to me, has always been about the sisters struggle to accept their situation and how they lived. And ultimately coming to terms and self-acceptance.
You could extrapolate a message about people labeled as "freaks" having the same dreams, desires and ambitions as anyone. And how in some way we are all "freaks".
