Are you Phil? And, the decision to stay open or close has nothing to do with reviews. It's all about ticket sales. And reportedly, this show has had quite the advance in ticket sales. It may even have recouped before opening! Basically, already sold out
What a shame this thread is already off to a wacky start...
I saw Fish in the Dark last Wednesday and loved it! As I said in the previews thread, I am a huge fan of Larry David, and the play certainly feels like a two-hour episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, but the audience I saw it with seemed to absolutely love it, too. I don't anticipate the show receiving universal raves, as I think the reception really depends on each individual reviewer's appreciation / dislike of Larry and his work, but I do expect some glowing reviews from those who like him, and negative reviews from those who don't.
In this case, the reviews don't mean a damn thing for the play itself. It's sold out, and would likely sell very well if they chose to extend it with Larry continuing to star. If anything, the reviews will hurt a) its awards potential, which is already stifled because of the difficulty comedies have in contending for major Tony Awards categories and b) Larry himself, who actually seems quite sensitive to criticism, but has obviously learned to deal with it after being in show business for three+ decades.
I'm hoping for great reviews for this one - I haven't laughed so much in the theater in a very, very long time!
Review matter for a likely secondary market....Extended run with possibly Jason Alexander taking over for Larry (Whether he likes it or not; I mean who else?)) and/or a movie or cable adaptation. Being good is what will give it those legs.
it's SOLD OUT. they will NOT close if they're sold out through june; and i'm pretty sure it sold out a while ago too. my mom wanted to get my dad tickets for his birthday and looked online the other day for 2 seats for every date and couldn't get anything!
