Candide Licensing Question #1
Posted: 3/3/15 at 5:58pm
Hello!
MTI has 2 versions of Candide available for licensing (1974 and 1999). I know Candide has a million revisions and I'm curious if one of those versions on MTI is the same as the recent Lincoln Centre version with Kristen Chenoweth and Patti LuPone and if so, which one.
(Found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaeYUouI6x4&list=PLAF61DE27898383EC)

Does anyone have experience putting on a version of Candide at a community theatre and know?

Thanks!

Candide Licensing Question #2

These answers must be preceded by the word "probably".

The 1974 version is probably the one that was done in an environmental staging on Broadway. The show was rewritten and played in one 1:45 minute act. The orchestra was cut down to 12 pieces. This production was the first to feature a new book by Hugh Wheeler with some new lyrics, and the staging was by Hal Prince and both won Tonys which was not common for a revival in 1974. When done with a light hand, this is very funny and lightning fast.

Probably the 1999 version is the "opera" version that while featuring an adaptation of Wheeler's new book, is done in 2 acts with a large cast and uses a full orchestra. This one plays a little less light that 1974 and all or most of the Bernstein score was restored.

There are recordings of both. The 1974 iteration was recorded in its entirety and is on CD.

With each of these, never lose your sense of humor or be afraid to be silly.
