What is it with this guy? For awhile it seemed like he had calmed down but looks like he is back to his old ways. Hopefully Lawrence finally unshackles herself from him and starts branching out.

So it's not ok for him but it is ok for you (when you went by "broadway guy") to be 100% unrelentlessly nasty to every single person here for no reason at all besides the fact you wanted to troll?
If she ever works with him again after this, she deserves what she gets. After this, she should tell him to go **** himself and never speak to him again.
Fantod, the thing is, DOR has a great reputation in hollywood for being an Actors Director. He (and Harvey of course) got all of his leads acting nominations with The Fighter, Silver linings Playbook and American Hustle. So, any actor would kill to work with him and they sadly are willing to go through mental and emotional torture if it means an award is in reach.
I realize that jobs are tough and sometimes you just have to bite down and hold on for dear life, but DOR's actions are just so uncalled for.

This was bound to happen. Regardless of the number of Academy Award nominations he has earned, he is a minimally talented sociopath. One incident with an actor can be written off as a fluke, but he has these moments on just about every film he directs. If you ever want to know what kind of person Russell is, just watch Emmanuelle Riva win a BAFTA over Jennifer Lawrence. The look on his face says it all.
I unabashedly love Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle. If he keeps making such wonderfully entertaining films, I could care less about his on set behavior.
It's a growing debate: can acceptable art be made by problematic people? Danny Elfman is a musical genius and an iconic composer and performer, but he is also known for being something of a misogynist and allegedly a racist. Admittedly, many of his lyrics have somewhat rapey overtones- many satirical, but some played fairly straight.
People like to excuse the personal personal actions of their favorite artists if they like their work enough. They claim it is separating the artist from the work, but that's total bs. They are just excusing that person's actions because it is convenient. I only recently learned of Russell's personal actions, andm indent then I have refused to watch any of his movies. I refuse to watch anything with or Bill Cosby, Woody Allen, Roman Polanski, and the like, because it is immoral to support the artist who engages in such disgusting habits.
It just strikes me as odd that before you knew about Russell's issues you found "all three of those movies to be repugnant, and not a single performance in any of them was worth any sort of nomination."
You're just a little too much like an After Eight fever wet dream to be, you know, who you claim to be demographically.
Well I'm sorry you are striken. The Fighter, Silver Lingings Playbook, and American Hustle were just about awful people doing awful things to each other, and I hate watching something like that.
That seems like odd criteria for dismissal of a narrative work. There are an awful lot of films, tv shows, books about awful people doing awful things to each other.
But Russell's movies don't show sympathy for the people who are subject to the abuse of the characters onstage, but instead attempt to make people without a single likeable characteristic be sympathetic in their personalities and actions. There is not a single emotonally satisfying moment in any of those movies.
And while I can think of many movies/plays/tv shows about awful people doing awful things to each other, but aside from Who's Afriad of Virginia Woolf?, I can't think of any others I don't hate.
The movies are also pretentious and the writing was very show offish. Though there was no Russell movie this year, Birdman took its place.
