I received an email from the Straight from New York master classes and workshops and in Tyce Green's bio, it states that "he is currently co-producing THE TOXIC AVENGER on Broadway, opening in fall 2015, which stars American Idol Constantine Maroulis."
I have never heard the music/listened to the CD of the show...
The actors elevated the material; Nancy Opel was indeed pretty funny. I saw it several times, and despite several clunker numbers it was always fun time. Definitely Off-Broadway material. Not even major rewrites would allow this thing to last commercially on Broadway.
Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco.
Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!
It was playing in the theater where I worked (NWS). I saw it several times with the former Celine Carvajal (now Lena Hall) in the female lead. Constantine would be great, but I didn't love the show. And yes, Nancy Opel killed it.
I saw the show off-broadway and in Texas. I must say I enjoyed it off-broadway more. However, I really do love this show. I still listen to the cast recording regularly and it has some great bits. I'd be happy to see it again but hopefully they get a small theatre.
"I never had theatre producers run after me. Some people want to make more Broadway shows out of movies. But Elliot and I aren't going to do Batman: The Musical." - Julie Taymor 1999
If they could rewrite the female material to let Lena Hall just screlt the mess out of the score, and let Constantine go crazy, I think it could work. It won't be a run away success, but I think it could sustain a year long run. It's got the same sort of Hedwig type fan base.
Also off-Broadway doesn't really indicate success or failure. I mean, In The Heights did pretty terrible off-bway and we saw how that went.
I loved Toxic Avenger and was on a high after seeing in off Broadway many years ago. I don't think it's large enough for a Broadway house. But I do love it. Maybe something like the Helen Hayes??? But doesn't Roundabout own that now?
It was a hoot, but not b'way material. I cant imagine I'd spend money on it again -- well, maybe to let my kids see it, but the discount would need to be pretty steep.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
Saw it Off Broadway years ago at discounted price and I don't see this as a Broadway show. Very over the top with some fun moments but this would be DOA IMO on Broadway.
I think this would be a Bialystock & Bloom production.
Somebody has a lot of money to burn.We already have an off Broadway show masquerading as a Broadway show charging Broadway prices. It is called Dames At Sea and it is dying a slow death at the box office.Toxic would meet the same fate.
I don't think it would be any massive hit. I mean if Hand to God can't find an off-beat audience, then I don't think this would work. But it would feel more Broadway than a lot of other musicals. If they could pepper the cast with some strong rock singers who are relatively well known it could be a fun night out.
