I'm very excited to be heading up to NYC for the July 4th weekend, and chose that time to see Little Shop of Horrors on Thursday evening. While starting to plan for the rest of the shows (I usually max out every available matinee and evening option), I noticed that almost all shows seem to be dark the evening of Saturday 7/4. Is it typical for there to be no shows on the 4th? Any recommendations for something other than the fireworks, which I'm sure would be great, but am assuming would be a madhouse to get a good viewing location?
Usually there are a few shows who do an evening show that night, but it is not that many. I know one year, I got a VERY cheap ticket to see War Horse as the fireworks were going off...
If I recall, Gentleman's Guide and Book of Mormon have performances the evening of July 4th. I also spoke to someone who works at Roundabout a couple months ago and he said they were 50/50 about adding a July 4th evening show for On The 20th Century.
A bunch of shows have an extra matinee on Friday July 3rd to compensate for losing their Saturday night July 4th show.
I will be in town as well but I think I will probably watch the fireworks. Has anyone ever taken one of the many boat cruises for July 4th? Are they a good idea, or a tourist trap waste of money?
The lack if shows us normal. Basically, they don't sell
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

Thanks everyone for your previous input. So I now have 4 of my 5 shows booked:
Little Shop of Horrors (Thu Eve) An Act of God (Fri Mat) On the Twentieth Century (Sat Mat) The Visit (Sat Eve)
Only 1 spot left (Fri Eve), and way too many good shows to pick from. Right now I'm leaning toward Fun Home, with Hand to God and Shows For Days as two other solid options. I also saw that Jeremy Jordan will be at 54 Below and it might be fun to see a show there (never been). Is there anything I am missing from the list that I should consider. King and I is out as the person I am traveling with does not want to see it.
