Any Simon Amstell fans here? He's the British Jewish gay former host of the wonderful "pop quiz" comedy panel show Never Mind the Buzzcocks, star and creator of the very dry Britcom Grandma's House in which he played a neurotic British gay pop quiz show host living at home with his oddball Jewish family, and now a big stand up star in the UK. He's been making the late night rounds recently - Conan, Fallon etc. And, it looks like he has a brief US stand up tour coming to LA, NY, Chicago and Austin.

Well, UK standups do more of a a prepared theater piece, so it will very much be the same thing as whatever he eventually releases as To Be Free on DVD (Region 2 only), just like last time he was in NYC, he basically did the exact same thing, just with Numb.
Oops, actually, last time he was here, he was working on new material and I was out of town, so that may have been different. But he is definitely here doing To Be Free this time.

Simon seems to be much more middle-of-the-road when he appears on UK talk shows than he portrays himself to be in Grandma's House, which I found to be disconcerting.
Never-the-less, Grandma's House was good fun in a cringe-inducing sort of way. Great to see Samantha Spiro on television after so many great performances on stage.

Posted: 1/25/15 at 6:04amIt's hard to pick a standout from that cast - the mother, aunt and the eponymous Grandma are all so wonderful. But, yes, Samatha Spiro's Aunt Liz was so funny and so cringe-worthy in the best possible way. She does uncomfortable-in-one's-skin better than anyone.
