Hi!
I am a soprano auditioning for some colleges and am in need of advice. I know that I an definitely singing Mister Snow from "Carousel", however I can't find a contrasting piece for it. I have been told by two people to pick a quirky character song. One said Mister Snow would be my downtempo and the uptempo should be older or newer then R&H era. The other suggested Crossword Puzzle, which I love, but told me that I couldn't use that with Mister Snow. So I guess this is two questions:
1. Mister Snow; uptempo, ballad or either?
2. What are some good not overdone character pieces?

Thank you! :)

Mister Snow is decidedly NOT a ballad. Carrie is having a giddy time telling Julie about this man she is in love with, and the tempo isn't down enough to be downtempo. It's a fantastic song though.

For your contrasting number, did you mean you were thinking of a song not from that same era? Maybe "Not a Day Goes By" or "Around the World" from Grey Gardens.

Mister Snow is an uptempo, and perfect for character actresses with a strong soprano. I think from there, it's a matter of finding an age-appropriate ballad that fits your type that might sit more in your chest voice.
