My school is doing In The Heights next year and I would (figuratively, not literally) kill to play Nina. Even though they're doing it as a fall/winter show, I want to select pieces now so I can practice them all spring and summer.
I already have a monologue I'm thinking of (even though it's from a TV show, people have auditioned with movie monologues before for shows here): Clara's "fear makes companions of us all" speech from the recent Doctor Who episode Listen. However, A. I'm worried it might not be right to audition for Nina with but B. all the more "Nina-y" monologues I've found are very overdone.
In terms of my song, I have quite a few I've been thinking of: Safer from First Date I'll Never Fall In Love Again from Promises, Promises (as a solo) On Monday from 35MM Watch What Happens from Newsies Quiet from Matilda (though I'm worried that might be hell on the accompanist) I'm Not Afraid Of Anything from Songs For A New World (ditto) U.N.C.O.U.P.L.E.D. from Starlight Express The Crying Scene from Murder Ballad The Girl Who Drove Away from The Unauthorized Autobiography Of Samantha Brown Superhero Girl from Starmites (I think I can pull an audition-length section from it)
So which of this sizable list of songs would be the best to audition for Nina with (or does anyone have any other ideas I may not have considered?
That's what I was feeling but I was keeping my options open since, from what I've heard, anything Jason Robert Brown would be even worse for the accompanist than the Matilda piece.
