I love the *concept* of "Stephen Colbert" of The Colbert Report. It's an amazing creation and there has, no doubt, been some great satire on his show, and before on The Daily Show, but I found it exhausting watching him stay in character all these years. I can't imagine how exhausting it must have been to be "on" as that character for so long. It would be like a Daily Show hosted by the correspondents and without John Stewart's straight man. I know the guest would often serve as the straight man, but it all became a little too nudge-nudge-wink-wink for me. Looking forward to see him move on.

I don't watch every episode of weeknight shows. I see em if I'm home or DVR em if I see a guest listed that I am interested in. Colbert's accomplishment is that he seemed to always be operating on four levels at once. When he takes something down, it's taken.

Was in L.A. last week and caught the live taping of Craig's Monday show with Carrie Fisher. He was and is in full "I don't give a s**t" mode and his segues with obscure cultural references and silliness was in full force. It was a wonderful thing to watch. Eddie Izzard was also on the show and summed it up well "other people have gone where you've gone but no one else has stayed there".

Oh, it's an enormously impressive accomplishment for that very reason. But, like Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Black, Colbert's performance was more one to admire than love - for me at least.

Bob - interesting that you mention Eddie Izzard being on the show. I always thought Craig's monologues owed something to Izzard's style of stand up.

I happened to see Ferguson host a Just For Laughs Gala in Montreal in 2008 and man did he ever go above and beyond the hostly duties. He had sets, production numbers, every possible Scottish thing you could imagine. It was one of the better shows I have ever seen live.

Yeah, I didn't catch Colbert every show, just let the guests pull me in. But I did make a point of watching the final three weeks...

Craig is doing like 3 shows at Town Hall in March(?) if anyone's interested. Not sure if they are sold out, though.

I record the show every weeknight and Smaug's appearance was nothing short of amazing. I wish Stephen Colbert the best when he's on THE LATE SHOW and also for James Cordon on THE LATE LATE SHOW.

Enjoyed Colbert, But LOVED Ferguson. There will never be another like him. It's so sad to me that there are only four shows left. I looked on my DVR info for friday and it said SERIES FINALE. Such a weird thought.

Colbert had a great send-off tonight. So many people on that stage. And I loved how they ended it with him throwing it back to Jon.

My eyes! My eyes! The sight of Andrew Sullivan grinding on Katie Couric was grosser than The Human Centipede.

But loved the Neutral Milk Hotel song over the end credits.

I loved every single thing about that Colbert finale. Security must have been nuts.

Ferguson brought out Josh Robert Thompson in last night's intro. And it was hysterical!!

The opening number from Craig's final show, similar in idea to how Colbert ended his show last night. Also, a kind of gorgeous segue from Darlene Love's piano-top performance at the end of Letterman.

Pretty great finale even though Leno makes my skin crawl. Funny ending, the sort of thing that will inspire _____ to start a thread because he recently discovered the new Craig Ferguson show about six months ago and he'll probably say how surprised he is there isn't a thread about Craig already.

it was fantastic, and sad as well. Loved his opening, the monologue & his last round of tweets. I guess he has some connection with Leno to make him his final guest. I wasn't expecting anything sappy to end the show, as he said he wasn't going out on a sad note. Here's his final monologue.

They really should have hired Geoff as the permanent new host.
