The same rumor surfaced before AR was announced, and then before MCH was announced, so... while I'm excited at the prospect, it is hard to work up the energy every time this rumor surfaces.
I like that they have a source who is confirming the gossip, though. That makes gossip have way more cred, when someone with no additional information merely confirms that said gossip exists, heh. And the guy close to the show says nothing, as they have for each new Hedwig.
I'm there if it happens, but I'll wait for a press release to get excited.
Hmm. I want to believe it, but isn't JCM quoted - I forget where, sorry - as saying that he and the producers determined that a Broadway run of Hedwig would be too grueling for him at this stage of his career? Or am I completely imagining that?
I've also heard this from a different source, but obviously don't know exactly how legit it is. But if it is, wild dogs could not keep me from that theatre.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
I think he's the perfect "winter doldrums sales slump" choice. He will renew interest in the show, get people to see it again, and you won't have to pay him as heavily as, say, a Sean Hayes star-type. He can get them easily through to the spring when Celine Dion/Adam Lambert/Pink/Clay Aiken can take over.
At the TimesTalk a few months ago with Neil Patrick Harris and Stephen Trask, JCM said that the final year that he performed Hedwig knocked the crap out of him, after which he "gave up acting." Then he turned to NPH and said with assurance, "And you will too." It was quite funny, just the way he delivered the line. Whether he's changed his mind since then, I don't know.
He has definitely ruled it out many times, but the prospect of having the close the successful Bway run could likely make him want to see it through the winter doldrums, as Nasty_khakis pointed out. And it's possible they have someone lined up for after.
Hedwig by now would be in her early fifties, but who knows if JCM wants to strip down at the end of the show? You'd have to be in terrific shape to want to do that.
Plus, JCM still looks pretty damn hot these days. However, it's Hedwig, so that really doesn't matter at all.

"Isn't someone who's almost 52 years old a little long in the tooth for this role?"
Since the show was crafted to JCM's age back in the day, and those historic elements haven't changed, then he will always remain the exact right age to play the role.
Hedwig is actually a bit older than JCM. Hansel was born the year the Berlin Wall went up, 1961. I don't think this is mentioned specifically in the play, but it is in the movie, and JCM said in one of his interviews at MCH's press junket that Hedwig would be 54 now.
And personally, I actually find it a little odd when Hedwig is super (conventionally) attractive as Hansel at the end of the show. While I thought Andrew's performance was great, I think it's a little hard to buy someone as a misfit and loser when they look like a Ken doll.
Crossing my fingers that John returns to this, if only briefly. It would be quite a thrill to see him.
Just because it would be poetic to end with JCM doesn't mean they would close after him. If ticket sales were strong enough, and they lined up another good Hedwig, why not stick around?
