Good Soprano Ballads

I'm looking for some suggestions for ballads for a soprano. Stuff that could be put into a college student's audition repertoire. I'd love suggestions!

I know this sounds flippant, but the world is full, chock full of good ballads for a soprano.

Here's a way to narrow it down. Find a singer with your range. Then listen to everything she has recorded. (In the case of Barbara Cook or Barbra Streisand, that's a lot of listening.) But soon you will hear a song you can relate to. Go get the music.

I tell this method to everybody.

I agree, theres so much out there, and everyone has theyre own taste and prefences.. Maybe give us some idea of what kind you are after?

Well to be honest, I love a lot. Sondheim is probably my favorite, along with R&H. I like more classic Broadway style (Adam Guettel is amazing). Maybe that's just because I've never attempted a pop/rock sound. I LOVE Julie Andrews, Laura Osnes, Sierra Boggess and Sutton Foster (there are so many more that I'm blanking on right now!).

Find stuff that they sing that appeals to you and add it to your rep.

People will say "Avoid Les Mis and Wicked since they are overdone." But the best advice is to find something you love to sing and knock it out of the park.

I would recommend "Moonfall" from The Mystery of Edwin Drood, since it is beautiful, but has a dark edge you can play with.
