Red Eye of Love - omg!

This has to be one of the WORST musicals I have ever seen. First and foremost let me say the TALENT is AMAZING. SUPERB. Every cast member, every design aspect, the choreography, the costumes, the lighting, the musical direction is all SUPERB. If these people can't make this show work NO ONE on Earth can.

It's the story of a man who owns a 14 floor meat market. He has a girlfriend and she cant decide between him or a mild mannered stranger she just meets. That's it. It's just bizarre. I understand parody, I understand all types of humor... this was just a big disaster. Dancing Cows. Dancing Sheep. All the meat jokes you can handle. Someone with a LOT of money was behind this.

I am anxious to hear other people's responses.

Please again let me say the cast is SO TALENTED led by Josh Grisetti and Alli Mauzey. Everyone else is superb and this is no way a reflection of their talent. I even liked the direction by Ted Sperling, but there was NOTHING there. There are moments in the score where it does work. It's the BOOK and the LYRICS that drag this into someplace insane.

I really enjoyed it a lot. It's a fun musical with a very talented cast, and a lot of funny absurd jokes. The Santa Claus jokes, meat jokes, etc were quite funny. It's a sarcastic dark kind of humor. Two men love the same woman: one man is rich and older (and owns the meat company), and the other is a young man who's about the same age as the woman. It runs a brisk 1 hour 54 minutes including the intermission, and received very hearty applause from the vast majority of the audience. Another win by Amas Theater.

The subway advertising inside the 77th St station is ingenious as well. All the subway turnstiles have "Red Eye of Love" advertising on them, so that people who live on the UES can be made aware of this musical.

It looks like a nice venue. Never heard of it before. But a 14th floor meat market? I'm sorry, what?

As awful as it sounds, it must be better than what I imagined when I first heard the title.

If indeed this is "dragged into someplace insane" as the OP states, that's probably as great a compliment as the creative team could hope for - this is, after all, an absurdist comedy.

Read this blog piece by John Guare for info and background on the original 60's production of the play and its subsequent history:

Believe me I didn't mean it as a compliment. This is the Moose Murders of musicals. But again, let me repeat, the cast is fantastic. Everyone on that stage is remarkably talented. Let's see what the reviews are like. I am not saying all of this to be snarky. I go the theatre with an open mind, ready to enjoy myself. I can always find the good in what is being presented. There is a lot of good in this show. But there is a lot of bad writing coming from the script and the lyrics. The music is passable.

I saw this tonight and I couldn't agree more with you curtains. The cast is fantastic and I loved everyones voice. It's just the story is so whacky and so ridiculous that there really is just no point to it. Those jokes about the bum with the rim shot were just cringe worthy.
