Israel and Hamas Close to Long-Term Cease Fire

According to the Jewish Daily Forward, this would be a permanent cease fire worked out in Egypt by 5 representatives from the Palestinian authority, 4 from Hamas, 3 from Islamic Jihad and 5 Israeli leaders who are presenting the agreement to their security cabinet.

The details are very interesting. Basically, Hamas gets everything but the seaport and the airport, which Egypt and Israel objected to because they could be used for importing weapons, and Israel gets everything short of the "demilitarization," which would have caused its own set of problems.

This won't bring peace.

You don't get it. These people aren't interested in land. They are interested in annihilating every Jew on the planet.

It seems to me that Peace can't take root when missiles are being launched and hostages taken and people killed.

Anything that brings peace--as in quiet, a sustained break in the cycle of violence--at least makes it possible for people work towards Peace.
You think, what do you want? You think, make a decision...

This won't bring peace.

Yes, but as the punchline to the old Jewish joke goes, "Maybe, maybe not. But it vouldn't hurt, vould it?"

Yeah, he didn't get it. It probably won't bring eternal peace, but as I said, in the MEANTIME, it might save some lives. dumkopf!

While this is not a lasting peace, it is a necessary first step in the right direction.

The only necessary step is the demilitarization of Hamas. How Israelis can stomach a "peace" agreement when two of the involved parties were formed solely to obliterate the Jewish people is beyond me.

No, you're the one not getting it. Let's go over this again. These are a group of people who want to wipe Jews off the face of the Earth. It's not about peace, it's not about land, it's about how many Jews can be wiped out.

As it says in the Talmud, "Today they want to wipe out the Jews--maybe tomorrow they won't want to anymore. Ya never know..."

And anyone clamoring for "demilitarization" should actually READ the article in the Forward. There are fascinating reasons the Israelis are NOT insisting on it.

I already read it. There are reasons the delegation, in particular, have backed away from it; saying it's the "Israelis" is not accurate since some members of the security cabinet strongly disagree with that decision.

As it says in the Talmud, "Today they want to wipe out the Jews--maybe tomorrow they won't want to anymore. Ya never know..."

Seeing as the Charter they live, work, and operate by declares the obliteration of Israel as one of their main goals, I don't think it's going to happen. Sorry. You're giving Islamic terrorists the benefit of the doubt, which really surprises me.

The Fox "News" playbook of vilifying "they" can be dusted off and used in many situations.

I have PalJoey and with regard to any Middle East topic, I have completely and fully supported you. You are on point with everything. Just worried that with so many desperate for peace (on both sides), we'll lose sight of the real issue and hastily compromise with terrorists.... who solely exist to destroy an innocent group of people, provided they're actually following their Charter. I have no reason to believe otherwise. Optimism is good but not if it detracts from the harsh reality.

At our lesbian and gay synagogue (and at many others) we amend the final line of that prayer.

So instead of simply saying "Ose shalom bimromav hu ya'ase shalom aleinu v'al kol yisrael v'imru amen" ("May the One who brings peace to the universe bring peace to us and to all Israel, and let us say, Amen"), we say "Ose shalom bimromav hu ya'ase shalom aleinu v'al kol yisrael v'al kol yoshvei tevel v'imru amen" "May the One who brings peace to the universe bring peace to us, to all Israel, and to the entire world. And let us say, Amen)."

The entire world. Can I get an amen to that?
