My tech guy set us up with a Synology NAS backup system. Our server and all of our workstations back up nightly to an off-site drive.

We (and lots of other Synology clients, apparently) have been attacked by what I can only describe as Internet Pirates.

They have hacked into the system and encrypted our data (ALL of our data--I can't open files on my computer sitting on my desk in my own office) and are holding it hostage--we have to pay the miscreants some number of Bitcoins equaling $300 in order to get the decryption code.

If we don't pay up by some date, the price goes up.

A. Even in the midst of being Victimized, I can't help but think this HAS to be a movie.

B. WTF???? The NSA has the time and staff to spy US Senators, but they can't protect me in my own home??

C. Where is safety to be found? In the Cloud? Can we assume that the Mega-Cloud providers--IBM, Google, Amazon--can protect us?

Personally, I vote for a return to parchment documents written with quill pens made of chased silver.
