There were various ceremonies and commemorations across Europe on Monday. In the UK we were asked to put our lights out and light a candle at 10:00pm and extinguish it at 11:00pm, 100 years to the moment since the UK joined the war.

I did and, from my house, I could see that many of my neighbours across the valley had done the same. I was really encouraged that so many people were joining in this mark of respect.
