Prostate Cancer Question

I hope this isn’t considered wrong to ask here. Has anyone on the board had Prostate Cancer and gone through radiation treatment with Lupron injections?

I’ve been a member of the board for a while, but not that active the last 5 years. I lived most of my life in NYC, moved to South Florida ten years ago and then moved to DC two years ago. I have a weird insurance based in NYC and while a large number of doctors take it in South Florida, almost no one takes it in DC. For that reason, when I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer last January, I commuted to NYC for treatment.

I initially decided on surgery and went into St Luke’s – Roosevelt Hospital June 8th for the procedure. The surgeon opened me up (large incision) but then something happened and I started to bleed. Once I had lost 40% of my blood (2 liters) he closed me up without doing anything. I’ve spent the last month and half recuperating from a surgery that did no good. I did test my blood to see if there was a clotting issue and I’m fine. The other doctors I have seen have said it was obviously surgeon error. Surprise, surprise … my surgeon won’t return my calls anymore.

Since I have major scarring from the first attempt, my new doctor recommends radiation treatment with 4 - 6 months Lupron injections. I’m coming up to NYC to get my Lupron injection soon and then I move back to NYC at the start of October for two months to do the radiation treatment. That part is the worst. While I always thought it would be great to come back to NYC for a period of time, the thought of living two months without my husband (we celebrate our 30th anniversary next April) is a bit daunting.

I was really hoping to talk with someone who has gone through the radiation therapy to get their views on what to expect. My personal email is georgemarcalderman@comcast.net . If you have gone through this, I would be grateful if you could write to me there.
Now living in DC. I really have to change my name on the board.
