C'mon, Polly Jean Harvey, you know we're waiting

Anyone else miss PJ Harvey? It's been more than three years since the magnificent Let England Shake. I am HUNGRY for a new PJ Harvey album. I had a three hour train journey yesterday and listened to nothing but PJ. The depth and diversity of her work as a singer-songwriter is so stunning. It's amazing to me how different each album is from the next and, yet, undeniably Harvey-esque. What a woman. I hope she never fizzles out the way the disappointing Tori Amos has.

I think PJ Harvey is overrated. I saw them live once and eh.

There was this queen in the audience though who stood up and really, almost nobody else was even in the mood and nobody behind him even cared enough to tell him to sit down and he was apoplectic that almost nobody else in the audience seemed to give a crap. Exasperated, he finally yelled, "It's Polly Jean HARVEY!". The weird thing is, they were headlining. And still, only that one queen seemed to care.

The song one with the screaming, that one was okay. I'm not even just being sarcastic, I actually can't remember the name but I *know* you know the one I mean. I like the Dresden Dolls cover of it better than the original.

Overrated. Man, I hate the proliferation of that term. Hell, I've been guilty of using it in the past, but it's so silly. If you don't connect with the work of an artist who has received a great deal of critical acclaim and popular adoration, just say it. You can say it doesn't work for you and that you don't like it without telling everyone who does that they've been duped.

Personally, I think Let England Shake is one of the best albums of the past 5-10 years.

I made sure to start my post with "I think" because I know how important that is here on PersonalAffrontWorld. I do think Polly Jean's overrated. I do. I wasn't being hyperbolic. I don't cast aspersions on you or one frazzled queen in the band's concert audience, which I paid good money to be a part of. It is not an uninformed opinion. I don't know what more you want from me. You asked a question, which I answered honestly based on my first hand experience. I never said anything about you or that one frazzled queen being duped. But I do wonder why it frazzles some people when others don't have the same reaction to material.

I don't miss PJ Harvey. I'm not waiting. I don't care if she never records again. But it's not like I hope she dies or anything.

Namo - rereading my response, I see that it can easily be seen as a direct attack on you. My apologies. Not my intention. Like you, I could care less if someone else doesn't share my affection for a certain artist or album or whatever. It was just a (late night, wine-fueled) rant about that word. I'm just sick of the term overrated. To me, the term is ridiculous, because it does connote a certain superiority over others. Otherwise, why use it? The term is referring to the opinions of others - not one's own, right? If, for example, Grandpa--excuse me--Mr. After Eight said that Sondheim's work is overrated, he's basically saying that those of us who enjoy Sondheim's work are rating it too highly.

By using that term, he's not saying "I don't like Sondheim's work, but it's fine if you do."

He's saying "I don't like Sondheim's work and you give him too much credit."

Eh. Forget it. More wine. I'll see you in the 'Looking' Season 2 thread.

"I see that it can easily be seen as a direct attack on you."

Actually, I didn't feel that way at all.

And that's as far as I read in your post so that I may clear the space and you may share your PJ Harvey dreams and perhaps find others who share them too.

Horse Tears,

I think you should avoid telling people what other people say when it's actually you who are saying it.

I say what I say. What you extrapolate from it is what YOU say.

Don't put words in other people's mouths.

I like her classic gothic-blues albums from the early Nineties better than anything she's done since, but her talent is still undeniable.
