After reading that brief synopsis, it sounds like a huge change from the original. I would almost call it "loosely based" rather than a remake.

Could be interesting. I think I always liked the first movie better than most people did. Far from my favorite, but I enjoyed it a lot.

Eh, it sounds like they're just rehashing this to bank off the "How to Train Your Dragon" franchise popularity. And with that plot setup, it should be called something else than "Pete's Dragon".

The graphic designer in me really likes that title treatment. Nice font. Nice color.

Is it still a musical? Candle on the Water is still one of my childhood fave songs. Otherwise, I think the film is pretty...crappy, at least upon revisiting it as an adult (I did love it as a kid, but I think I saw the edited version.)

I love the original so much. The score is one of the best for any Disney movie.

I'm assuming they cut the songs. And without Shelley Winters....just meh to the whole thing.

So I'll be checking out Zac Efron and Robert DeNiro that weekend.

The original was such a huge flop.  But Disney is very excited about this one.  And Shelly Winters was horrid in the original.

Here's a description of the very brief clip shown at D23:

but according the very brief clip shown, the remake looks to change the tone into something a little more realistic. The set-up is that a young boy has survived, seemingly on his own, for six years in the woods. Cut to Robert Redford looking at a crude child's drawing of a dragon, and Pete setting his hand down to pet an actual dragon covered in hair.

I have a soft spot for the original, especially the score but I'm open to a different interpretation of the material. The original was not a flop. It cost 10 million to make. It earned about 40 million and Candle on the Water earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.

Helen's "Candle on the Water" really was lovely, no argument. Simple and all about childhood, its boundaries, insecurities, safety zones, mysteries.

I can't wait for the remakes of the beloved The Horse in the Grey Flannel Suit and the classic The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes.

I was at the live action movie panel at D23 and saw the clip in question (it didn't actually show the dragon at the end, just the boy's hand touching some fur).  It was exciting to see Bryce Dallas Howard in person talking about her experience working with the little boy who plays Pete.  The movie looks intriguing, but it definitely is only loosely based on the original.  Basically all it seems to have in common with the original is that it features a boy named Pete, who has a dragon for a friend.

@Carlos.  I stand corrected.  It was not a financial flop.  But it wasn't very well received .  The downfall based on everything I have read was that it was a movie made by committee.

@Namo I am guessing it won't surprise you to know that Disney (classics) like Superdad , Worlds Greatest Athlete,  and Escape To Witch Mountain are all in development for redo's.

They did Race to Witch Mountain with The Rock several years ago. I guess it didn't too well or there would have been a sequel by now.

I want to see them do Candleshoe and The North Avenue Irregulars.

@Tazzie  There is definitely a new Witch Mountain in the works. And it is not a sequel to the one with the Rock.   And we will also be seeing Herbie back in the future.

Sounds like it should be titled "How Pete Trained His Dragon".

Oh, I really hope they don't touch Candleshoe, that is another movie that needs to be left alone.

From the looks of the trailer, it seems to be more of a sex-change remake of "Nell" with a dragon...

LOL

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian
