When will we ever see a WHITE Orpheus?

This is affirmative action run amock. I guess I should be glad they are being upfront that this is a "black" show so that we non-racists can select other, more inclusive fare. But I really don't see the need for another minority-appeasing re-write. After all, Orpheus was a REAL PERSON and he was Greek, not black. And Broadway is the "Great White Way" is it not? Well, it USED TO BE.
"Black" Orpheus

That said, I hope they open this up to talented performers of all races and cast Orfeh. I want to see that marquee: Orfeh in Orpheus.

Or is she too young?

I'm going to try the ignore user feature for the first time because JoeKv99's ignorant, racist rants are really burning my crack.

I thought you liberals were supposed to be so tolerant. So much for that.

Bigotry aside for now... Orpheus was not a real person, but rather a human in a Greek Myth. And Broadway was known as "The Great White Way" because of all of the white lights used on marquees and such at night, way back in the day when electric lights were a newer, rarer thing.

Back to bigotry... I'm as liberal as they come, but your comments are ugly and offensive. I support your right to say them and feel that way, so support me when I say STFU.

There would never be a show called White Orpheus, since it would just be called Orpheus.

What makes you think I'm a liberal? There are actually conservatives who respect people of various races, religions, cultures and so forth. Bigots, not so much.

Jk, you beat me to it. The mythical Orpheus, I might add, wasn't Greek per se; he was Thracian--one of the Greeks' more barbaric neighbors. And I don't recall a Thracian ever having played him.

And "Black Orpheus" isn't about the mythological Orpheus; it's a reimagining and modernization of the Greek myth. And it contains parts for white cast members.

I guess racism is still part of the holy triumverate that includes stupidity and ignorance. I'm relieved to see that some things never change.

I think many people are missing the fact that this is meant to be a sarcastic thread.

I'm laughing that people are taking this seriously.

Well, it is hard to tell when you can't really her a posters tone of voice. We only see what they post. Tbh, at first I did not realize that this, or the Leslie Uggams thread was sarcastic. (I think)
I can't even! Ughh! Don't you...don't you understand? I'M IN TECH!!!

Anyone who's read any of Joelv's posts over the past 10 years would know that's sarcasm.

He's smart enough not to misspell a comment chiding another poster for not being bright.

Just sayin'.

When will we ever see a WHITE Orpheus?

"It's now rather very common to hear people say 'I'm rather offended by that'. As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more than a whine. It has no meaning, no purpose. It has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that'. Well, so f**king what?"--Stephen Fry

I resent the assertions that Orpheus wasn't a "real person" or that he was a Myth or (worse yet) Thracian. Myth, Thracian: It's all Greek to me. Can't we all just get along?

Joekv, Black Orpheus is based on the classic 1959 film by Marcel Camus, "Black Orpheus," which featured a classic song, Manha de Carnaval, which might have been written about you, it translates into English as....

Personally, I'd rather see Pink Orpheus or Rainbow Orpheus.

On a brief, serious note: we shouldn't assume that all ancient Greeks were what we would call "white". They didn't construct race the way we do and wouldn't necessarily have cared or noted a citizen of African descent and coloring.
