Probably should have won for Best Scenic Design, Definitely should have won for Lighting Design, Could have won for Costume Design (but I got no problem with Twelfth Night winning that), and should have won for Sound Design (but lost to a musical).

I saw this and had mixed feelings about the show. I liked the staging, Lighting, but just could not get into it. There were much better shows.

I agree that MACHINAL was a very impressive production, but the ACT ONE set was just as impressive, the GLASS MENAGERIE lighting just as evocative and haunting, and MACHINAL did not lose to a musical as there are separate categories. And you can snark all you want, but LADY DAY AT EMERSON'S BAR & GRILL is a play with music.

It's not like something undeserving won in its stead. The Plays were very technically strong this year; MACHINAL was in great company.

Well, that's not an ignorant statement.

In my opinion, lighting can make or break a show. It's an essential part of a great theatrical experience.

That said, I didn't get to see Machinal. I loved the lighting design of Glass Menagerie, though. Incredible work by Natasha Katz.

My comment was not meant to imply lighting is not a skill nor am I saying it's not important to a show. What I am saying is that the average theater goer doesn't really care about who wins the best lighting Tony much less gets really worked up over it. To a few on here, it may be a big deal but I don't think those folks are representative of the broader theater going public.

In the past I made my living by doing theatrical lighting. I care. The lighting affects the entire show. Not only does the lighting enable you to see, but it also enhances the mood, sets the time, and in many cases suggests different locations on the stage at the same time without the use of scenic elements. A production is only the sum of its parts. No one part is any more or less important than the other. Don't poo-poo the lighting category simply because you have not taken the time to fully appreciate its value.

That's hardly a cut-and-dried fact, inasmuch as other award groups placed it in the musical category.

First Date could've gotten some love in my opinion...it was actually such a cool show, and the set and lighting designs were interesting enough for a Tony nom. Krysta Rodriguez was stunning as well.
