My high school is doing Cabaret next year and I'm not the thinnest of actors. Would my body shape still work as the part?

Since it's an HS, your production will probably be more along the lines of the less sexual original production concept, so yes.

This role has always been given a lot of leeway to the individual performer.

I saw on MC in Sydney who was over 6 feet tall and built like a rugby player, and it worked.

If you can, do a bit of subtle advance work. Just a tiny campaign.

Figure which of your friends are chatty and mention that the MC can be any size not just short and thin. Then let them do the work. This could be labelled as sneaky, but nobody was born on top of the mountain.

If you know the director really well, tell them you think the MC can be any body type--like yours for instance--and you'd love to audition for the role because you think you can sing it, act it and dance it. Ask if you can prepare the MC's songs.

Then prepare one (or two) of his songs even if they say no. Don't sing them first off, but use them as a back-up to your primary audition.

Of course it can.

Just sell it.

I would rather see a 300 lb MC who owns the performance over a waif who is forgettable, and any director worth their salt would think so too.
