Can we discuss mental illness? No person of sane mind films himself murdering two people, feels justified in those killings, then posts the videos for everyone to see. We can agree to that, right?

Yes, in most of these cases it does come back to mental illness. If the guns were gotten legally by the person with the mental illness wouldn't that be reason enough for more stringent background checks and evaluations? I am also for gun owners having to purchase liability insurance in order to own a gun. We need to be insured if we drive a car, own a home or even open a business.

It does not necessarily indicate mental illness or insanity.  A person can know right from wrong and extreme behavior and still choose to do it.  We see idiots posting videos of themselves committing all sorts of crimes and wrongdoings without ever using the words "mental illness".  Could this particular event involve mental illness?  Sure.  Do we automatically agree that it involves "mental illness" because of how we would respond to the same situation and how his actions make us feel?  No.

I heard something about the shooter having been laid off. Whether this is the case or not, we do hear about disgruntled ex-employees returning to the job and shooting people there. I don't necessarily consider all these events caused by mental illness.

I think some of us have a low threshold of anger management, or depression or frustration, etc. Those people cannot control it and therefore they act on it but I don't think they're all mentally ill.

It's a bummer "mental illness" has entered this conversation.  Of course people who shoot other people are mentally ill, isn't that a given?  How are we going to fix mentally ill?  That will never go away, guns can.

When has that ever been "a given"?

It's not a 100% given, acknowledged.  But it usually is when it's not an accident.  I just hate it that the conversation goes that way rather than outrage about how effed up this country can be.

Actually, I'll tell you where the mental illness comes in, and I may have to change my opinion that I stated above.

The mental illness comes in when a person is not able to stop themselves from shooting when their emotions get the best of them. They know it's wrong to kill but they aren't able to stop themselves. That's the illness.

I'd like to know what the general consensus by psychiatrists would be.

There is where your lawyer uses the Temporary Insanity Defense. A blind rage or fear that overtakes a relatively normal person.

Maybe I should start a new thread, but keeping on this topic of mental illness, obesity/overeating is referred to very often as a disease. A mental disease, which I think along these same lines manifests itself in the person not able to stop overeating although they know it's wrong for them.  I myself am not sure if it's a disease, since I think a disease is something you did not bring on yourself. A person doesn't HAVE to keep eating.

But then I think of what I said before, that the illness comes in not being able to stop. I am confused about this.

it sounds as if you are thinking only about a particular type of shooting, because mental illness is not the "usual" reason every time one person shoots another person with a gun.  I'm not a gun advocate AT ALL, but I do not believe gang-related shootings or the...let's say legitimate for argument's sake...protection of self or others from immediate danger (either by civilians, police or the armed forces) to be evidence of mental illness.  There are loads of reasons people shoot each other.  I doubt the majority of them are related to mental illness.

Jane, with overeating as with alcohol, drugs, gambling and yes, even sex, it is a disease. It changes the brain's chemistry. Sure people know it is wrong, but they can't stop. But that is for another thread.

Mr Matt, yes, there are many reasons why people kill others. Not all are due to mental illness. I do believe however that a person who opens fire in a movie theatre, a Grammar School and on live broacasts, while recording it, we do have to keep in mind mental illness.

“I am so stricken to think that these two young people doing the work that you guys do every single day would be murdered on live television. We have got to do something about gun violence in America. I will take it on. There are many people who face it and know it but then turn away because it’s hard. It’s a very political, difficult issue in America. But I believe we are smart enough, we are compassionate enough, to figure out how to balance the legitimate Second Amendment rights with preventive measures and control measures so that whatever motivated this murderer who eventually took his own life, we will not see more deaths, needless, senseless deaths.

“I want to reiterate how important it is not to let another terrible instance go by without trying to do something more to try to prevent this incredible killing that is stalking our country and we’ve had so many terrible instances of it in the last two years. It happens every day. There is so much evidence that if guns were not so readily available, if we had universal background checks, if we could just put some time out between the person who is upset because he got fired and the domestic abuse or whatever other motivation may be working on someone who does this, maybe we could prevent this kind of carnage.”

has it been mentioned in this thread yet that the reporter who was killed - Alison Parker - is the daughter of Andy Parker - who was in the Broadway cast of "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas " in 1982.

Hesione Hushabye thinks it tastes like ashes.

Could someone help me here. Did the person who committed this horrible murder actually film himself doing it? That's what it looks like to me. Maybe if everyone was forced to watch this scary video there would be movement toward regulating handguns. It is long past time.

He did, yes. And apparently he posted it to twitter so of course it's everywhere now. I believe tomorrow's NY Post cover is a couple stills from the video. Unfortunately I don't know how much good the video will do- I mean, after Sandy Hook I have no hope for any sort of gun reform passing.

When Wal-Mart decides to change up their gun selling strategy, you know there is no true gun control.

What a HORRIBLY written article.  (and a horrible circumstance.)

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
