The family of the kid whose father accidentally killed him at the gun range has set up an on line account to help pay for the funeral and other matters.

Didn't see any post about this, but this week two separate black men, Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, were gunned down by police. Sterling, who was had already been tased, was being pinned down by two officers when one said he had a gun and fired shots into his torso. Sterling did have a gun but had a legal license to carry it and clearly was nowhere near using it, since one of the officers had to pull it from his pocket after he'd been shot. Castile was pulled over for a broken taillight and informed the officer that he was legally carrying a weapon, as he's supposed to. He was then shot when the officer asked him to reach for his identification. He was shot with his girlfriend in the passenger seat and his 4 year old daughter in the backseat. 

Both killings were absolutely unwarranted by anyone's standard. Absolutely shameful, and I hope all the officers involved are brought to justice, though I'm not holding my breath. There's also a rally happening today in Union Square Park at 5PM for anyone in New York.

I saw the video tapes of both events. Downright disgraceful! Castile did what he thought was the right thing and informed the cop he was licensed and had a gun on him. Four-five bullets, really?

This is horrible and disgusting. And it all feels like deja vu. Isn't this an exact repeat of last summer? How can things be so bad and yet continue to stay the same?

For every person who bemoans technological advances and people's "obsessions" with their phones, these would continue to be isolated regional stories that would never make the national news if it weren't for the easy access most of us have to phone cameras.  This is nothing new, we're just talking about it as a nation...finally.  So, we'll wring our hands, just like we do after mass shootings like in Orlando.  We'll sign petitions and demand some quick solutions from our elected leaders.  Perhaps some symbolic legislation will actually be passed.  Perhaps.  And then we'll all move on until the next black person is gunned down by police.  At the end of the day, this isn't just a police issue.  This is a systemic, institutional issue and it can't be solved by DOJ investigations or largely ineffectual legislation.  

 

So, as much as "social media activism" is bemoaned as meaningless, ego-serving, social-justice-warrior'ing, I do think these conversations - in the media, online and, (hopefully) with friends and family will be part of the solution.  You don't raise consciousness and address bias overnight.

I just saw the Castile video, I don't know what the hell that cop was thinking, the guy had a 4 year old in the back seat, told the cop he was licensed to carry and he freaks out, just an absolutely foolish and stupid decision that should have been handled completely differently. There is no way he doesn't serve time.

This is insane. 11 officers shot, 4 dead. They are searching for suspects and a bomb threat that was called in. Chaos in the streets.

There is just no justification for any of it. Except, there is too much fear which is justified. There is too much hate which is justified. There is a lack of fairness, a lack of education, and a lack of hope.

So it is not justified; it is just perfectly reasonable.

I stayed right in that area where this all happened a few months ago. Lovely city, just can't believe this stuff keeps getting worse and worse. Hopefully they catch all the people involved and they get what the deserve.

The people who are saying "why have no BLM leaders expressed condolence" (when BLM leaders already have) are the same people who say "why do no Muslims object to  terrorism" when millions and millions of Muslims do.

I care deeply. I am appalled by police brutality and over-excessive use of force. It is unforgivable. I, too, hope you feel the same passion and grief and pain and empathy over the tragic loss of five innocent police officers. Right?
