I saw La Mirada’s new production of Les Miserables last night and found it to be a very good production. The vocal performances were mostly (perhaps even universally) outstanding, and James Barbour (Valjean) and Randall Dodge (Javert) were exceptional. Being somewhat familiar with James Barbour, I was looking forward to seeing him tackle the role of Valjean (which I later found out he had never previously performed in any production of Les Miz). As incredibly good as Barbour was, Randall Dodge was the highlight for me. I don’t think he was overall as amazing as Andrew Varela was when I saw him two years ago on the 25th anniversary tour, but Dodge was fantastic.

I've always thought of Barbour (whose voice is glorious) as more of a Javert. I had no idea he had the high notes for Valjean. I'm glad to hear he does.

His rendition of "Bring Him Home" is absolutely astounding-you can find it on youtube (he put it up). I love his rendition-and would love to see him here in NY as Valjean once Ramin leaves. (I too thought of him as more of a Javert, but boy does he nail the high notes.)
