The Framers of the Constitution knew the Fledgeling Country, had no standing army after the Continental Army was disbanded and required it's citizenry to be able to grab their rifles be called into service in case of attack.

Once the US assembled the US Army 3 June 1784, the second admendment could have been admended. I guess no one saw the need. Then again no one knew we would have assault weapons and high volume clips.

Not really. I could defend with a hunting rifle. Not as well as I could with the AK-47 I intend to purchase at some point, but it would make do.

I find it amazing that every gun enthusiast I know immediately jumps to regulation of guns, background checks, a waiting period, is taking away everyone's gun or abolishing the second admendment. My half brother is one of them.

Because an argument seems "stale," which in this case I take to mean "old," does not mean they don't gain in relevance. It's fine to complain that they are tired arguments--but when examples continue to pile up that the fact that those "rights" do continue exist in the "land of the free," and yet it more deaths that are *directly* caused by those rights increase compared to other "free" nations that don't have those rights is much harder to complain about than saying an argument is stale.

As others have said. The US has the *fourth* highest gun violence *per capita* in the world. Can you give an example in the past 100(+) years where this has helped ANY democratic country? Do you really see a future so bleak that it COULD or would save any democratic country? Paris wouldn't have been saved from the Occupation by having more men wandering the streets with guns. London's Blitz wouldn't have been. 9/11 wouldn't have been any different.

My dad while I grew up worked off and on for the Irish government and I would spend Summers with him. Seeing guards at department stores and theatres carrying assault rifles never made me feel safer--it scared the crap out of me. And I know it never made my dad feel safer, or any of his friends (nor did it stop any bombs that happened.) I can't imagine going to a department store and seeing someone just "doing their shopping" carrying a gun would make any sane person feel safer (and I admit, I just don't get gun culture--I don't understand how anyone with a rifle would feel safer carrying one on them. Call me paranoid, but I would be scared crapless that I would accidentally fire it and injure or kill myself, or, worse, injure or kill someone else. And I honestly think anyone who lives in a country they *want to live in* and feels they need to arm themselves is paranoid, and not living a happy life.)
