On James Snyder's Broadway.com video blog, we saw him in the studio listening to tracks for a Cry Baby recording that will be available for people licensing the show. Anyone know anymore about this and if there'll be a commercial release? (I hope I'm not the only person who would love a copy of the recording!)

I don't know how many songs were recorded- I know when I talked to Harriet Harris about it she said "I wish we had recorded the show". But I know that James Snyder has said that something may come of it.

In all actuality, it's probably a demo recording, nothing more.

New Line Theatre in St. Louis posted this on their Facebook---

"CRY-BABY co-songwriter David Javerbaum tells us that they hope to finally release a Cry-Baby cast album by the end of this year, using the reduced orchestrations they created for New Line's American regional premiere of the show in 2012."

Ughh. that St. Louis production was HORRIBLE! I mean, just plain awful.

Yes, usually commenting ones thoughts on a message board will always be 100% their opinion.

I for one really enjoyed it- it had it's flaws, but I had fun.

What flaws did it have for you? I've always thought they could improve it, but could never put my finger on how.

I believe it's MTI?

From what I've heard from people involved with this recording - it's not particularly something one would want to pay for.

It's always surprised me that this show never got a recording given that Adam Schlesinger has a successful career with Fountains of Wayne.

I know the two are technically unrelated but you'd think that there would be some interest what with all his pop fans.

None of his pop fans came to support the show while it was running, so odds are they wouldn't have been interested in a cast recording either.

Well it's a lot more expensive to come to New York and pay for a Bway show than it is to buy a cd.

I'm not disagreeing with you though, I don't know how interested his fans would be in a musical he wrote. I guess I just thought he would/could use his influence to get a recording made had he really wanted to.

I think one of the main reasons Hardbody got recorded was because of Anastasio. That's strictly conjecture on my part, but it seems likely that his name added value to the prospect of a cast recording.

It seems odd to me that they would bring back the OBC to record an album that would only be sent out with licensing material as a reference recording. Wouldn't it have been cheaper to hire studio singers? If they planned on releasing it that would be a different story. I don't get it.

MTI will not be licensing Cry Baby. The last I heard was Theatrical Rights Worldwide but that could have since changed.

@brettarnett Yes, and yes! Also I'd love to hear "Just A Little Upset." I remember seeing it on the Tonys and I thought it was great.

I applied for the rights. It was to a law firm, I believe. I got the name of the firm from the producer at New Line. The script was COMPLETELY different than the Broadway production. It used the songs from the old demo that everyone seemed to have.
