Italian Film Question

A friend has asked me for help about an Italian that he can't remember the name of. All he can tell me is this:

"an Italian post war black and white comedy about making a film in a small Italian town that involves the whole townspeople."

Ring a bell with anyone? Any leads would be much appreciated.

It's post-war by a couple of decades, and it's in color, but could this possibly be AFTER THE FOX? Consult the Wikipedia plot summary.

Carlos -- alas, that's all the info I have.

Madlib -- thanks for the suggestion, I'll pass it on, but I don't think that's it. My friend is very specific about the black and white.
