I've actually wondered why it never made it to Broadway, also. I'm assuming it has something to do with money...

The cast recording is great fun but the creatives seemed to never be able to settle on a version to bring to Broadway. The UK tour was revised a bit and the first US tour was further revised from the West End incarnation and then heavily revised when Tommy Tune joined the cast. Some songs were shuffled around and some reassigned and the show became a 90 minute one act. There were rumors that Tune was scouting theatres for a stint on Broadway but it never materialized. The version that MTI licenses is two acts again and seems to be an amalgamation of all incarnations. The West End version represented on the cast recording is closest to the film and seems to work the best. Not sure why they didn't just license that. Obviously they felt something was wrong with it despite the mostly positive reviews the show received originally.

There was a Doctor Dolittle musical that toured the U. S. about a decade ago. Poor reviews, poor business.

Anyone remember anything about this? I think it was based on the Rex Harrison movie, but it came after the Eddie Murphy revamp, thus confusing customers expecting one version and getting the other.

It may or may not have been a "pre-Broadway" production but it sure didn't make it.

That's the same tour I was talking about. They closed it down after the bad reviews and Tommy Tune revamped it and stepped in as Dolittle, but it didn't do much better. There was talk of the show going to Broadway with Tune, but nothing came of it.
