This thread is for matching a singer with a song they coulda/woulda/shoulda sang had they been alive to sing it.

Judy Garland - Losing My Mind from Follies
Judy Garland - Back To Before from Ragtime
Patsy Cline - Another Suitcase In Another Hall from Evita

Damn, two Judy Garland threads in the span of ten minutes. You must be self-flagellating big time tonight.

Not Broadway, but Billie Holiday singing Misty.

You might as well just say Judy Garland singing most of the stuff Sondheim wrote for his more mature leading ladies, since I would say "I'm Still Here," "Ladies Who Lunch," and "Send in the Clowns" would have all been wonderfully interpreted by her along with the two songs mentioned in the first post. And though she would have been far too old to do the show by the time it was written I would imagine she would have also brilliantly incorporated "Old Friends" and "Not a Day Goes By" into her concert repertoire.

I agree with most of this. However, I disagree with Ladies Who Lunch. She had the talent and she was one of the best at putting a song over. But I think the song is too angry for her style. Her style included innocent, playful, wistful, sad, lonely but I don't think she ever had an angry song. Ladies Who Lunch is strident, and while Judy could have performed it, it just doesn't seem to fit her persona.

I recently read the Mel Torme book and I admit to a renewed interest in her. However, liking Judy Garland only means that I join millions of other people who recognize a great artist. I also like Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Nicks, Patsy Cline and Vestal Goodman. What does that say about me?

^^^^LOL.

My nominee for funniest post of 2014, at least thus far. (And I admit to loving all those singers, except that I've never heard of Vestal Goodman.)

This is a great idea (and title, too) for an album using sound-alike performers.

"Is that an ottoman on her head?"

That's Southern Pentecostal hair.

Too bad Kathie Lee didn't make a Broadway show out of Vestel's life. It would still be running. When she died, she got a mention in Rolling Stone magazine which made her son laugh.
