CARRIE at The Broadway Workshop

I went to go see my friend in "Carrie" at the Broadway Workshop tonight, and WOW! I am so surprised on how good it was. It was performed by all teenagers, and the show works so much better with them instead of actors 18 and up. I'm a big fan of the show and loved it off-broadway, but this was a million times better! I know the remander of the shows are sold out, but you need to try and catch this production. REALLY amazing!

Is it just a carbon copy of the revival (as most productions seem to be these days)? What makes it special? Is Margaret actually beating Carrie yet?

If only. They just made the show so vanilla. Where is the darkness of the original Stephen King novel? No adaptation of the book has ever truly shown how horrible everybody is to Carrie, which really justifies the massacre.

Even with the vanilla licensed script, there's still some wiggle room to make it scary. It's not easy, but definitely possible. It honestly astounds me how tame I've seen Margaret portrayed since the revival. In the Seattle production with Ripley, "Eve Was Weak" was staged SITTING DOWN if you can believe that.

While I am a huge fan of this show, I will agree with one thing about the revival. It was dangerous enough. I believe that the character of Carrie should be beaten by her mother, should be tormented beyond belief by her peers. The strange thing is, in previews when the show was Off-Broadway, they did have Margaret hitting Carrie with her hands and the Bible. They also had Miss Gardner slap her before the light broke (which was cut) and I think the teens were a bit more cruel to her. I wonder why that was cut. Was it a writer's choice? Director's choice? Actions speak louder than words.
