bdn223, that's a good possibility. I could see the producers of the ceremony salivating at the chance to liven up the year in plays montage with a performance by Audra.
Aladdin: Friend Like Me to show off James M. Iglehart After Midnight: Something featuring either Adriane Lenox or Fantasia Beautiful: I'm guessing it could be "You've Got a Friend" or the title track. An outside possibility is the curtain call song "I Feel The Earth Move" is worked in (it's her most recognizable song I think) Gentleman's Guide: I think "I've Decided to Marry You" will be worked in there, "You're a D'Ysquith" would be a neat song to include.
Revivals: Violet: On My Way Hedwig: Wig in a Box-it's probably the best song out of the context of the show (no bad language or sexually explicit parts and it works very well apart from the show), although "Midnight Radio" would be incredible (with Lena Hall coming from the audience at Radio City) Les Miz: Hoping for "Bring Him Home", but they'll likely do "One Day More"
And I'm sure Ms. McDonald will be performing something.
I could see Aladdin doing a partially pre-recorded medley, much like Disney did with Beauty and the Beast. or alternatively simply do friend like me and at some point in the show have the flying carpet make a cameo (hugh and jasmine flying down anyone?)
"Grease," the fourth revival of the season, is the worst show in the history of theater and represents an unparalleled assault on Western civilization and its values. - Michael Reidel
Or how about they save our ears and DO NOT let Menzel sing a thing since we have a season full of far more worthy singers. Let her introduce something.
I know it's a very long shot, but I'd love to see Mary Bridget Davies perform. So many people missed the show, and she was just so damn good! It sounds like they're planning a tour (presumably with her), so it wouldn't be a bad idea as a marketing tool. Maybe they can create some sort of Janis/Billie Holiday medley since they have eerily similar tragic stories?
If Idina does sing (which I'm assuming is very likely), I hope it'll be "Always Starting Over". We've already heard her sing "You Learn to Live Without" enough times and ASO is her real 'diva' moment in the show.
After Midnight-Daybreak Express/Zah Zuh Zah Aladdin-Friend Like Me Beautiful-(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman/On Broadway/Beautiful A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder-I Don't Understand the Poor/I've Decided to Marry You Hedwig-Tear Me Down/Wig in a Box Les Miserables-One Day More Violet-All to Pieces/Let It Sing
Wild Cards: The Bridges of Madison County-One Second and a Million Miles Bullets Over Broadway-Tain't Nobody's Biz-ness If I Do Cabaret-Cabaret If/Then-Always Starting Over Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill-God Bless the Child A Night With Janis Joplin-A Piece of My Heart Rocky-Keep On Standing
Is it naive to suggest that something from each of the nominated SCORES should be represented? At least that would secure deserving spots for If/Then and Bridges, along with the expected Gentlemen's Guide and Aladdin selections.
Similarly, without a nomination either for Best Musical OR Best Score, I can't imagine why Bullets would perform at all.
And frankly, if I never hear another awards show medley of songs from Les Mis, it will be too soon.
I really hope Cabaret gets to perform. My dream is for the show to open with Wilkommen but I know they don't usually like to give that honor to one of the nominated shows. Maybe the show getting slighted for best revival and Alan's ineligibility will change that. Otherwise, I'd think they want to do something to showcase Michelle Williams, so most likely the instrumental title song into her solo version?
As for Hedwig, I agree it will most likely be Wig in a Box with a transition into Midnight Radio so they'll have a chance to bring on Lena.
What would be incredibly neat for Hedwig to do, but I'm guessing they won't, is to go from "Wig in a Box" to the transformation that happens during "Exquisite Corpse" and then into "Midnight Radio". (They don't have to do "Exquisite Corpse" but the transformation is rather necessary for the point of that moment to get across.)
I loved last years awards, from the amazing opening number to the "tv sucks" medley to Audra's mike dropping finale
Just make me that happy.
But please stop the fictional characters introducing numbers. Maybe have the actors actually give their Real names. Too mature?

Well, maybe Roundabout saved enough by not presenting their already-closed revivals in the past to find the dough to pay for a Cabaret spot. Or maybe this is another page in the we-need-the-publicity-to-fill-the-coffers playbook.
Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.
